HAMILTON, Ont. – The following student-athletes have been named OUA Football Players of the Week for the period ending September 15, 2013.
OFFENCE: Jazz Lindsey, Guelph Gryphons, Quarterback
Third-year quarterback Jazz Lindsey (Markham, Ont.) had a breakout game for the Guelph Gryphons Saturday afternoon against the University of Toronto Varsity Blues. Playing on a national stage, Lindsey led his team to a 38-12 win, completing 21-of-34 passes for 297 yards and four touchdowns. The Sociology student burned the Blues in the air, but also carried the ball three times for 25 yards, helping the team to their highest offensive scoring mark this season. For his efforts, Lindsey was named Porter Airlines Player of the Game. The Gryphons improve to 3-0 on the season and host the McMaster Marauders this weekend for their 2013 Homecoming Game, broadcast live on Sportsnet 360.
DEFENCE: Beau Landry, Western Mustangs, Linebacker
While the offence was the story of Western’s 83-27 rout of the Ottawa Gee-Gees, Beau Landry led the Mustangs defence on Saturday afternoon. The fourth-year King’s College student from Kitchener, Ont., led all defenders with 10.5 tackles, while adding one sack and recovering two fumbles. The linebacker, who was recently named the top-ranked OUA prospect for the 2014 CFL Draft, is currently in second place among all CIS defenders with 27 tackles this season.
SPECIAL TEAMS: Lirim Hajrullahu, Western Mustangs, Kicker
Lirim Hajrullahu had an impressive outing on Saturday, contributing 19 points in the Mustangs 83-27 win over the Ottawa Gee-Gees. The fifth-year kicker from St. Catharines, Ontario, was 3-3 on field goals and added 10 extra points, narrowly missing out on tying his own team record of 11 PATs set in 2011. Hajrullahu currently leads all CIS players with 70 points scored this season, with 11 field goals, 30 extra points, and seven single points.
