Warriors spoil Ravens' home opener

OTTAWA - Warrior quarterback Jamie Cook threw for 242 yards while adding a passing and a rushing touchdown to lead the Warriors to a 48-7 win over the Carleton Ravens.
With the win, Waterloo improved to 1-2 on the season, spoiling the Ravens’ home opener in the process. The game was the first in 15 years for the new look Ravens.
“I am very proud of the performance of our team today,” mentioned head coach Joe Paopao. “We achieved our goals and executed well to earn an important victory. It was a great day for university football in Ontario and hats off to Carleton for being great hosts and battling hard throughout the entire game.”
The visiting Warriors led from start to finish jumping out to a 24-point lead before Carleton found the scoreboard. Kicker Jake Fiorucci was the early story for the black and gold, putting up 10 of Waterloo’s first 17 points. Fourth year receiver Nick Anapolsky got in on the action as well in the first half with an 11-yard pass for the major. Anapolsky had a game high 12 receptions for 110 yards on the afternoon.
Also having a standout game for Waterloo was third year running back Danny Silvestri who found the endzone twice and led all rushers with 120 yards on 13 touches.
The turning point of the contest came off a Brandon Corelli pick that he turned down field into six points for the visiting Warriors to give them a comfortable 38-8 lead. Cook would add a 26-yard rushing major to seal Waterloo’s first victory of 2013.
Despite the loss, Ravens' benchboss Steve Sumarah was pleased.
"There was a fantastic atmosphere out there today it was electric,” said Sumarah. “Playing in front of a home crowd like that with so much noise and emotion was a definitely a first for most our guys.”
