OUA By The Numbers
August 28, 2013
HAMILTON, Ont. - A weekly look at the facts and figures from around Ontario University Athletics.
78 – Points scored by the Windsor Lancers in their season opener, a new team record. All-star QB Austin Kennedy (Windsor, Ont.) went 24-28 for 335 passing yards and six touchdowns in three quarters of work while also adding 108 yards and a major on the ground. For his efforts, Kennedy was named OUA offensive player of the week. In total, the Lancers gained 743 yards and this marks the second straight year the Lancers scored 60+ points in their season opener.
127 – Yards for Guelph Gryphons’ freshman running back Johnny Augustine. Augustine, a Welland, Ont. native, rushed for 127 yards in his OUA debut picking up 25 on his longest run. The highly touted recruit led the Gryphs in rushing yards.
12 – Solo tackles for McMaster’s Scott Martin (London, Ont.) on Sunday. The fourth-year defensive back was an absolute terror on the field racking up 12 tackles against the Ottawa Gee-Gees. Martin’s dozen tackles were a game high and a career high, as he is already 80% on his way to matching his 15 tackles from last season.
20 – Consecutive wins against Ontario teams for No. 6 McMaster. The Marauders haven’t lost a step in the OUA as they extended their conference winning streak to 20 games. The reigning two-time Yates Cup champions last lost to an OUA opponent on Sept. 10, 2011, when they fell to the Western Mustangs. The winning streak will be on the line Saturday when McMaster visits the No. 2 Queen’s Gaels in Kingston.
15 – Years between games for the Carleton Ravens football team. The Ravens will play their first varsity football game since 1998 when they take on the Western Mustangs at TD Stadium. It’ll be a tough test for the young squad as they match up against a nationally-ranked opponent on the road. The ‘Stangs are coming in hot after a 50-14 win over Toronto in their season opener and a win by the Ravens would be a major upset.
4 – Touchdowns for Giovanni Aprile in Queen’s 52-1 win over the York Lions on Sunday. The Scarborough, Ont. native caught two Billy McPhee TD passes, rushed one in on the ground and returned a missed field goal attempt for 115 yards and a score. Aprile’s day didn’t end there, as he picked up another 122 yards on two punt returns. He was named special teams’ player of the week and will be a player to watch Saturday against McMaster.
3 – Wins for the Carleton Ravens men’s basketball team against NCAA Div. 1 opponents. The three-time reigning CIS champs went 3-1 against Div. 1 opponents, beating the Wisconsin Badgers (95-82), TCU Horned Frogs (77-51) and Towson University Tigers (67-41) before losing to the Syracuse Orange 69-65 in overtime.
