Kennedy, Martin and Aprile earn week one honours

HAMILTON, Ont. – The following student-athletes have been named OUA Football Players of the Week for the period ending August 25, 2013.
Offence: Austin Kennedy, Windsor Lancers, Quarterback
Kennedy (Windsor, Ont.) led the Lancers to an impressive 78-11 victory over the Waterloo Warriors on Sunday, which set a new team record for most points scored in a single game. The fourth-year quarterback went 24-for-28 totaling 335 yards and 6 touchdowns in the air, and added 108 yards rushing and one touchdown on 13 carries.
Defence: Scott Martin, McMaster Marauders, Defensive Back
Martin, a fourth-year defensive back, had a game high 12 solo tackles in the Marauders 51-24 season-opening win over the Ottawa Gee-Gees on Sunday. The London, Ont., native totaled 15 solo tackles in six games last season and is poised to smash his personal best this year. Martin also broke up 2 passes on Sunday.
Special Teams: Giovanni Aprile, Queen’s Gaels, Returner
Giovanni Aprile (Scarborough, Ont.), a fourth-year returner, ran back a 115 yard missed field-goal attempt for a score in Queen’s 52-1 rout of the York Lions. Aprile, who also played as a receiver, finished with two punt returns for 122 yards, one kick-return for 25 yards and three more touchdowns.
All three players were named as CIS football players of the week. The Canada West and RSEQ conferences kick off their seasons this week while AUS starts on Sept. 6.
