19 OUA players selected in 2014 CFL Draft

TORONTO – Nineteen players from seven Ontario University Athletics institutions were selected in Tuesday’s CFL Canadian Draft, placing the OUAsecond among all CIS regional associations. RSEQ led all CIS regional associations with 21 players chosen, while Canada West schools saw 11 players selected and another eight players came from Atlantic University Sport members.
It was a record night for CIS football as a whole as 59 players from the league were selected out of 65 total picks (90.8%), shattering the previous standard of 44 set a year ago (out of 60 picks). The eight CIS standouts drafted in the opening round also tied the league mark from 1970 and 1972.
Leading the way among the OUA contingent were Western, Queen’s, and Toronto, with each school having four players drafted. The McMaster Marauders were just behind with three players selected, while Windsor had two players names called and Guelph and York each had one player chosen.
Laval and Montreal led all CIS programs with six players selected, followed by Manitoba (5), Concordia (4), Queen’s (4), Toronto (4) and Western (4).
Mustangs linebacker Beau Landry was selected the highest among all OUA players, going in the first round, eighth overall, to the Hamilton Tiger-Cats. Along with Landry, Mustangs Dylan Ainsworth (11th overall, Saskatchewan Roughriders), Joe Circelli (25th overall, Calgary Stampeders), and Brian Marshall (61st overall, Calgary) all received calls from the CFL on Tuesday night.

Defensive back Andrew Lue was the first Queen’s player chosen, going 10th overall to the Montreal Alouettes. Receiver Scott Macdonell was selected 13th overall, going to the expansion Ottawa REDBLACKS, while defensive lineman Derek Wiggan (34th overall, Calgary), and defensive back Matt Webster (39th overall, Saskatchewan) were chosen in the fourth and fifth rounds respectively.

Toronto saw a pair of players go in round two with running back Aaron Milton (15th overall, Edmonton) and receiver Alex Pierzchalski (18th overall, Saskatchewan) come off the board within moments of each other. Two other Varsity Blues players got the call on Tuesday night including offensive lineman Aaron Wheaton (28th overall, Ottawa) and linebacker Christopher Johnson (44th overall, Hamilton).

Kicker Tyler Crapigna (40th overall, Calgary) was the first McMaster player chosen, going midway through the fifth round. He was joined by linebacker Aram Eisho (56th overall, Winnipeg Blue Bombers) and long snapper Kevin Malcolm (65th overall, Ottawa) who were both selected in the seventh.

Windsor had two players selected in short order on Tuesday as receiver Evan Pszczonak (42nd overall, Toronto) and defensive lineman Stephon Miller (46th overall, Ottawa) were chosen within four picks of each other.

Guelph Gryphons defensive lineman Jeff Finley will be heading to Montreal after the Alouettes grabbed him with the 22nd overall pick, and he’ll be joined in la belle province by York Lions defensive lineman James Tuck who came off the board with the 31st pick of the draft.

Pierre Lavertu, a centre from Laval University, became the eighth CIS player in as many years – and the 12th in the past 15 years - to be selected first overall in the CFL Canadian Draft when the Calgary Stampeders called his name at No. 1, on Tuesday evening.
Eight more CIS stars were called in each of the second, third and fourth rounds, with nine following in the fifth, seven in the sixth and 11 in the seventh, which included two more picks than the other rounds.
Defensive linemen were the most popular CIS players as no less than 18 were called. Offensive linemen, linebackers and receivers tied for second (8), ahead of running backs / fullbacks (7), defensive backs (6) and kickers (4).
