LONDON, Ont. – After two days of competition at the OUA Baseball Championship three teams remain in contention for the crown with the Western Mustangs, Brock Badgers, and Toronto Varsity Blues all looking to capture the OUA banner on Sunday.
The Mustangs, who didn't see action on Saturday, hold a slight edge on the other two squads as they remain the only undefeated team in the tournament after their two wins on Friday. Both the Badgers and Varsity Blues have each suffered a loss, with Toronto falling to Laurier in the tournament's first game, while the Badgers were edged out by the Blues earlier today.
Since the championship is contested under a double elimination format, the Mustangs will have to lose twice on Sunday to be eliminated from contention, while both Toronto and Brock are only one game away from being sent home.
The Badgers were one of two teams, along with Ryerson, to play three games on Saturday as they completed their suspended game against the Rams before squaring off with Toronto and Laurier to round out the day. Despite the heavy schedule the defending champions performed well, going 2-1 with an 11-0 win over Ryerson, a 4-3 loss to Toronto, and a 7-6 win against Laurier.
Toronto was also involved in multiple contests on day two, starting the day with the win over Brock and finishing things off by knocking the Rams out of the championship with a 7-6 win.
With three teams remaining in contention there will be at least two games taking place at Labatt Park tomorrow with the Mustangs and Badgers meeting at 10 AM. The remainder of the schedule hinges on the outcome of the day's first contest.
Should the Mustangs defeat Brock, the Badgers would be eliminated, and Western would face Toronto at 2 PM. Western could then capture the title with a win over the Varsity Blues, however a Toronto win would force a winner-take-all second game between the two sides, scheduled for 6 p.m.
In the event that Brock were to win the 10 a.m. game all three remaining teams would have one loss on their records. The Badgers would advance directly to the 6 p.m. championship final with Western and Toronto playing at 2 p.m. to determine which team would earn the right to play for the OUA title.
