Offence explodes in Golden Hawks win over Guelph

The Wilfrid Laurier Men's Baseball team hosted the first place Guelph Gryphons on Saturday at Bechtel Park. It was a cold and windy day that saw Laurier prevail 15-1 in game one.  Game two was stopped in the 5th inning due to poor field conditions with Guelph ahead 3-1.  Game two will be picked up where it was stopped on Tuesday night at Bechtel Park at 6:30pm.

Laurier jumped on Guelph's starting pitcher in the first inning with 3 quick runs.  The Golden Hawks blew the game open in the 3rd inning when they put up 9 runs to take a commanding lead and cruised to a 15-1 victory.  Jordan Petruska was very efficient in earning the victory for Laurier.  He threw 6 innings giving up 1 run on 3 hits with 1 walk and 1 strikeout.  Austin Hassani worked a scoreless seventh inning to close out the game that ended after 7 innings with the mercy rule being invoked.   Laurier put up 16 hits on the afternoon and were led by Jonathan Brouse with 4 hits; Alex Kupchak with 3 hits; John King and Ryley Davenport with 2 hits apiece and other hits to Daniel Apostoli, Brett Medland, Adam Shaver, Cal Murphy and Matt Voight.

"We really broke out offensively today against a good pitcher" commented Head Coach Scott Ballantyne.  "Jeff Hunt manufactured a run for us without a hit to lead-off the game and then we took advantage of some mistakes that they made.  After the tough loss to Western last weekend, I was glad to see our guys come out and put together a complete game against a really tough Guelph team".

Laurier will return to action on Sunday as they host the York Lions for a doubleheader starting at noon at Bechtel Park.

Golden Hawks run win streak to three

The Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks men's baseball team swept a double header from the York Lions on Sunday at Bechtel Park.  The Golden Hawks prevailed 7-3 in game one and finished off the sweep with a 13-3 mercy shortened victory in game two.  The two wins improves the Golden Hawks record to 17-6 (7-4 in conference play).

Game one started out as a pitchers dual as freshman Christian Hauck got his first career OUA start for the Golden Hawks.  He worked 6 excellent innings for the Golden Hawks and kept his team in the game.  With the score tied 1-1 in the bottom of the 6th inning, Laurier loaded the bases for Alex Kupchak.  Kupchak delivered with a grand slam HR to break the game open.  Laurier never looked back and won the game 7-3.  Hauck gets the victory as he goes 6 innings giving up 1 run (unearned) on 5 hits with 1 walk and 5 strikeouts.  Adam McBride picked up the save throwing the final 3 innings giving up 2 runs on 3 hits with 5 strikeouts.  Offensively the Hawks were led by Kupchak and his 4 RBI and a stolen base.  CF Jonathan Brouse had 2 hits with 3 runs scored and 3 stolen bases.  Adam Shaver contributed with 3 RBI.

Game two saw the Golden Hawks fall behind 3-0 in the top of the first inning.  But Laurier got their bats going and scored 13 unanswered runs to win a mercy shortened 5 inning game, 13-3.  Zach Lawrence worked an effective 4 innings for the win as he gave up 3 runs (2 earned) on 1 hit with 2 walks and 1 strikeout.  Nick Murray finished off the game with one scoreless inning.  Offensively, the Golden Hawks banged out 11 hits and were led by Adam Raithby who had 3 hits.  Jeff Hunt, Brouse and Brandon Washkevich each had 2 hits.  Ryley Davenport and Matt Voight also had hits.

"We played a couple of solid games today," commented Head Coach Scott Ballantyne.  "Their pitcher kept us off balance in game one and the game was tight for longer than we would have liked, but Alex gave us a charge with that grand slam.  Christian Hauck was excellent for us and we needed him to give us a big start.  I was proud of the way we responded in game two after falling behind 3-0 early.  We put up a lot of runs this weekend and we're playing well heading into our busiest week of the season."

Laurier has a busy week coming up as they will finish the suspended game from Saturday on Tuesday vs. Guelph at Bechtel Park at 6:30pm.  The game is in the top of the 5th inning with Guelph up 3-1.  On Wednesday, Laurier will travel to Kitchener to pick up a suspended game with the University of Waterloo.  This game will be picked up in the bottom of the 5th inning with the game tied at 4.  Game two will be played after the completion of game one.

Byckowski leads Brock baseball to 9-4 victory over Waterloo

WATERLOO, Ont. - The Brock University baseball team improved to 9-2 in conference play as they defeated the Waterloo Warriors by the score of 9-4 Saturday afternoon on the road.

The Badgers jumped out to a 1-0 lead with rookie Rob Byckowski (Milton, Ont.) scoring Justin Gideon (Pickering, Ont.) in the first inning, The Warriors would answer back with one in the bottom of the first and two more in the fourth to take a 3-1 lead after four innings.

In the fifth, Brock would make it a one run game as Phil Steer (Toronto, Ont.) scored on a Gideon sacrifice fly.

In the top of the seventh, Brock would score five runs on a Dennon Koziol (Hamilton, Ont.) RBI single and a grandslam from Byckowski to take a 7-3 lead.

The Badgers added two more insurance runs in the eighth on a wild pitch and an RBI single by Byckowski to make it 9-3.

Brock had 16 hits in total led by by Byckowski who went 4-for-5 with a career high six RBI. Ricky Ferri (St. Catharines, Ont.) was 4-for-5 with three doubles while Jordan Grant collected three hits going 3-for-5. Rounding out the offense were Koziol (2-for-4, RBI)  and Quinton Twohey (London, Ont.) and Blake Stepien (Guelph, Ont.) who both added singles.

Dylan Perego (Waterdown, Ont.) picked up a no decision throwing five complete innings allowing three runs on five hits while striking out three. Rookie Chase Porter (Whitby, Ont.) picked up the win throwing three shutout innings giving up one hit while striking out one.

The Badgers return to action Sunday, October 4th when they host the McMaster Marauders at George Taylor Field.

Brock extends conference streak to 11 with sweep over Marauders

ST. CATHARINES, Ont. - The Brock University baseball team (20-5 overall, 11-2 OUA) picked up their 19th and 20th wins of the season as they swept both ends of a doubleheader against the McMaster Marauders Sunday afternoon at George Taylor Field. The Badgers won Game One by the score of 12-8 and Game Two 2-1.

In Game One, Brock starter Ryan Beckett (Tiny, Ont.) was solid throwing six complete innings allowing one run on two hits with seven strikeouts.

Offensively, Jordan Grant (Mississauga, Ont.) went 3-for-5 with three RBI and a stolen base. Rob Byckowski (Milton, Ont.) also collected three hits going 3-for-4 with a double and RBI. Justin Gideon (Pickering, Ont.) (2-for-4, two RBI, 2B) and Dennon Koziol (Hamilton, Ont.) (2-for-3, RBI) both added two hits each in the win.

In Game Two, Brock captain Ricky Ferri (St. Catharines, Ont.) hit a walkoff single in the bottom of the eighth for the 2-1 victory.

Badgers starter Jeff Baggaley (Whitby, Ont.) went six innings allowing one run on six hits with three strikeouts. In relief, Phil Owen (Richmond Hill, Ont.) threw two shutout innings for the victory.

Quinton Twohey (London, Ont.) led the way going 3-for-3 with an RBI. Ferri, Byckowski, Phil Steer (Toronto, Ont.), Ben Kirby (Burlington, Ont.) and Noah Koffman (Richmond Hill, Ont.) all added singles.

Blues down Lions on home field

The University of Toronto Varsity Blues baseball team defeated the York Lions 14-4 and 7-6 in their doubleheader on Saturday, October 3 at Dan Lang Field.
