AROUND OUA: Badgers extend OUA win streak to eight game
Brock baseball sweeps Golden Hawks on Alumni Day
ST. CATHARINES, Ont. - The Brock University baseball team extended their OUA regular season win streak to six games as they defeated the Laurier Golden Hawks by scores of 11-5 and 8-4 Saturday afternoon at George Taylor Field.
During batting practice, Brock Baseball Hall of Famer Dan Baribeau took some swings and showed that he still has some pop, belting one over the left field fence.
Prior to the game, Brock Baseball inducted two individuals into the Brock Baseball Hall of Fame who made a big impact to the program. The first inductee was Shaun Valeriote who played two seasons at Brock and was twice named the OUA Top Hitter and became the first OUA player to be drafted to the major leagues by the Toronto Blue Jays. Also inducted was former coach and builder Ron Zimmerman who started with the program in 1996 and was part of two CIBA National Championships (1998, 1999) and three OUA Titles (2002, 2004, 2010). Ron was a great coach and was very instrumental in the community building partnerships during his years with the program.
Since it's first season in 1995, Brock Baseball continues to be one of the top program's in Canada, thanks to all those players, coaches, and staff from the past and present that have worn the Badgers uniform.
In Game One, Brock's Justin Gideon (Pickering, Ont.) led the offense going 3-for-4 with an RBI and three runs scored. Jordan Grant also collected three hits including an RBI double. Phil Steer (Toronto, Ont.) (2-for-5, RBI) and Josh Wray (Burnaby, BC) (2-for-5, RBI) both chipped in with two hits each. Rounding out the offense were Dennon Koziol (Hamilton, Ont.) who belted a two-run double, Ricky Ferri (St. Catharines, Ont.) (1-for-5, RBI), Ben Kirby (Burlington, Ont.) (1-for-2, RBI), Rob Byckowski (Milton, Ont.) (1-for-2) and Blake Stepien (Guelph, Ont.) (1-for-1).
Brock starter Dylan Perego (Waterdown, Ont.) went eight strong innings allowing four runs (two earned) on eight hits with two strikeouts for the victory.
In Game Two, Gideon continued to swing a hot bat going 2-for-4 with a homerun, four RBI and two runs scored. Grant (2-for-2) and Byckowski (2-for-3) added two hits each. Quinton Twohey (London, Ont.) and Taylor McVey (Milton, Ont.) both collected RBI singles in the victory.
On the hill,Jeff Baggaley (Whitby, Ont.) threw four innings allowing four runs on four hits whle striking out two and walking three. Rookie Chase Porter (Whitby, Ont.) continued to be a spark in relief throwing two shutout innings with three K's. Closer Phil Owen (Richmond Hill, Ont.) came on in the 7th and threw one shutout inning.

Brock baseball improves to 8-2 with sweep over Ryerson
ST. CATHARINES, Ont. - The Brock University baseball team improved to 8-2 in conference play as they swept the Ryerson Rams Sunday afternoon at George Taylor Field. The Badgers won Game One by the score of 6-3 and Game Two 11-3.
In Game One, Brock starter Ryan Beckett (Tiny, Ont.) picked up the win going 6 1/3 innings allowing one run on four hits while striking out four and walking four. In relief, rookie Chase Porter (Whitby, Ont.) struck out four of the six batters he faced and senior closer Phil Owen (Richmond Hill, Ont.) got the Rams in order in the 9th for the save.
Rob Byckowski (Milton, Ont.) led the way going 3-for-4 with a double and two RBI. Blake Stepien (Guelph, Ont.) went 2-for-4 with a double and Justin Gideon (Pickering, Ont.) was 2-for-5 with a double. Adding single hits were Dennon Koziol (Hamilton, Ont.) (1-for-5, double, RBI), Jordan Grant (Mississauga, Ont.) (1-for-4, RBI), Phil Steer (Toronto, Ont.) (1-for-3, RBI) and Josh Wray (Burnaby, Ont.) (1-for-4).
In Game Two, the Badgers jumped out to 4-0 lead in the bottom and never looked back on route to their 8th consecutive conference victory.
Quinton Twohey (London, Ont.) (2-for-3, 2 RBI), Gideon (2-for-5, RBI, 2 stolen bases), and Grant (2-for-4, RBI, double) all chipped in with two hits each. Ryan Laird (Aurora, Ont.) drove in two runs while Steer (1-for-3, RBI), Michael Enss Ward (Mississauga, Ont.) (1-for-3, RBI) and Koziol (1-for-2) rounded out the offense.
On the hill, Brandon Beattie (Niagara on the Lake, Ont.) threw 3 1/3 innings allowing one run on three hits with one strikeout for the victory. Derek Zwolinski (Burlington, Ont.), Alexander Nolan (Burlington, Ont.), Dan Phillips (St.Johns) and Hayden Waselynchuk (Stoney Creek, Ont.) all threw shutout innings in relief.

Warriors go 3-1 in weekend play with Mac and Guelph
The Waterloo men's baseball team went 3-1 in weekend play sweeping aside the McMaster Marauders at home and splitting their road games with the Guelph Gryphons.
In Waterloo's opening game at Jack Couch on Saturday the Warriors opened up the bottom of the first with three runs and didn't look back as they added two more in the fourth and three more in the seventh to pick up the 8-5 win.
At the plate Michael Clouthier (Guelph) continue his hot bat with three hits and two RBI's while Kyle Balzereit (Brantford), Donald Smith (Waterloo ), Haydon Friesen (Altona), and Erik Werner (Burlington) each had two. Balzereit also crossed the plate twice and added a walk. On the mound Brandon Semus (Windsor) improved to 2-1 pitching six innings while giving up three hits and striking out five. Austin Coles (Ancaster) picked up the save sitting down three straight Marauders with one strikeout.
In the next game, the hot Warrior bats continued as the black and gold mercied the Marauders 14-4 in six innings of play. The win was Waterloo's fourth straight.
Clouthier had another three hit game while adding three RBI's while Balzereit and Smith had two RBI's each. Chris Bombino (Guelph) also had a standout game at the plate with two hits, a walk and an RBI. Alexandre Lojko (Barrie) went the distance allowing just four hits over six innings.
The Warriors were looking for their fifth straight win in their first of two at Guelph on Sunday and got a brilliant effort on the mound by third year starter Ryne Weppler (Walkerton) against a very strong Gryphons team. Weppler pitched a complete game shutout allowing just five hits in nine innings as Waterloo blanked Guelph 2-0, handing the home side their first loss of the season.
Unfortunately for the Warriors their winning streak would come to an end in the back end of their double header with Guelph as the Gryphons topped the Warriors 13-3.
Waterloo is now 7-3 on the season and sit comfortably in third spot in the OUA standings with 14 points. Guelph is in first with 18 points while Brock is two back with 16.

Blues go 1-1 with Marauders
The University of Toronto Varsity Blues baseball team split their doubleheader with the McMaster Marauders on Sunday, September 27 in Hamilton, Ont.
The Blues dropped Game 1, 12-11, but bounced back with a 12-6 win in Game 2.

The Varsity Blues return to action this Wednesday, September 30 as they host the Ryerson Rams at Dan Lang Field.
