Western defeats York behind strong hitting
TORONTO - The Mustangs scored early and often in an 18-4 route of York that featured a display of both offensive and defensive prowess.
Ace Owen Boon started for the now 2-1 Mustangs, going 5 strong innings and giving up one run while striking out 4 en route to his first victory of the season. Jordan Krupa came in to finish things off in the 6th in some difficult conditions when the game was called due to rain.
"It's always nice to pitch with a six-spot coming into your first inning of work," said Boon, who credited the offence for his confidence on the mound.
Offensively, the lineup exploded, scoring 6 in the first and 12 throughout the rest of the game. While almost every Mustang either recorded a hit or got on base, they were led by designated hitter Andrew Firth who went four-for-four with five RBIs including two home runs, one a monster-shot to left that will likely land sometime tomorrow.
Always humble, Firth was quick to give credit to his teammates.
"I was seeing the ball well today and I gotta give some credit to the guys who got on base for me," Firth said. "It's always better to hit when there's guys out there in front of you. Great win for the team."
Next up for the Mustangs is a shot at the defending champions, the Brock Badgers, September 20 at Labatt Park. Two-time OUA pitcher of the year Adam Paish will get the start in the first game starting at 1p.m. with David Lehmann starting the second game shortly after.
