OUA By The Numbers
September 11, 2013
HAMILTON, Ont. - A weekly look at the facts and figures from around Ontario University Athletics.
24 – Consecutive regular season victories for the York men’s soccer team. The No. 1 Lions are Canada’s top team and haven’t dropped a regular season game since Oct. 7, 2011, when they fell to McMaster in Hamilton. The Lions are roaring through four games this season, winning their matches by a combined 17-2 score. Two players, Mark-Anthony Kaye and Jonathan Lao, are tied for the OUA scoring lead with four goals each this season.
5 – Touchdowns for Western Mustang quarterback and CIS football player of the week Will Finch. The Burlington native put on a clinic against the McMaster Marauders, completing 26 of 35 passes (74.2%) for 449 yards and five touchdowns with no picks in a 58-15 win. Finch made quick work of the reigning two-time Yates Cup champs and guided Western to their first win over McMaster since 2011.
2 – Consecutive losses for the No. 9 McMaster Marauders football team. The mighty maroons dropped back-to-back games for the first time since 2010, both to nationally ranked opponents (No. 2 Queen’s and No. 3 Western). Prior to the game against Queen’s, McMaster had dominated OUA, winning 19 straight games against Ontario opponents. If the Marauders are to make a run at a third straight Yates Cup, their journey likely takes them to Kingston or London in November.

The third-year business major became the fourth pitcher in Brock history to toss a no-no, joining Fabio Del Rio, Drew Arnold and Mark Nicholson. Veres went five complete innings, striking out six and walking one batter.
3 – Goals for UOIT striker Cassandra Sribny (Pickering, Ont.). The Ridgebacks rookie scored her first career OUA goals in style, picking up a hat trick in a 5-0 win over the Windsor Lancers. 4 – Wins for the Guelph women’s soccer team. The Gryphons are off to a dynamite start, going 4-0 and cracked the CIS Top 10 in the most recent rankings. Guelph is powered by fifth-year striker Erica Bain (Niagara Falls, Ont.) who is tied for the league lead in goals with four. The Gryphs put their streak on the line when they visit the No. 9 Laurier Golden Hawks on Saturday.
