OUA By The Numbers
October 16, 2013
HAMILTON, Ont. - A weekly look at the facts and figures from around Ontario University Athletics.
408– Points for the Western Mustangs. The ‘Stangs are 17 points shy of setting a new OUA single season points record needing only two touchdowns and a field goal (or 17 rouges) to surpass the 2003 McMaster Marauders 424 points. That shouldn’t be a problem for the country’s top ranked team, as the Mustangs have scored 50 or more points in six of seven contests this season. The OUA benchmark ranks third amongst CIS football teams, as Laval’s 481 point season in 2003 is the CIS record.
9 – Points shy of establishing a new CIS all-time scoring leader. Western Mustangs kicker Lirim Hajrullahu (St. Catharines, Ont.) currently sits second on the all-time list with 402 career points, eight behind Ottawa’s Neil Lumsden (410). Lumsden’s record has stood since 1975, but Hajrullahu can set a new record with three field goals on Saturday against York. Through seven games, Hajrullahu has 110 points and currently leads the CIS.
13 – goals for No. 2 Ryerson Rams midfielder Alex Braletic (Thornhill, Ont.). Braletic’s 13 goals lead the OUA and are three ahead of York Lions rookie Jonathan Lao (Unionville, Ont.). Braletic’s lucky number shattered his previous high of three goals, set in the 2009 and 2010 seasons. Under the leadership of the two-time second-team all-Canadian, the Rams are 11-0-1 and have clinched the top seed in the OUA East.
1st – Win for the Carleton Ravens women’s soccer team over the No. 1 Ottawa Gee-Gees. Carleton beat the Ottawa 4-1, marking the first win since the Ravens soccer program was established in 1994, a span of over 40 games. Abby Nicastro (Ottawa) scored twice in the win for Carleton.
10th – OUA women’s tennis title for the Toronto Varsity Blues. The Blues won their 10th title – and first since 2007 – scoring 18.5 total team points. Toronto swept the doubles side of the action and won four of the six singles finals.
2nd – Consecutive OUA men’s tennis title for the Western Mustangs. The Mustangs edged out a half point victory over the Montreal Carabins. The Stangs did not win as many singles flights as the Carabins, but made up for it with strong play across the board and the second flight doubles title. Western wins back-to-back titles for the first time since winning three straight from 2002-03 to 2004-05.
0 – Hits allowed by Laurier pitcher Ian Filion. The reigning Pioneer Energy OUA athlete of the week threw a no-hitter over the weekend in a 12-0 shutout of the Toronto Varsity Blues. Filion struck out three batters and walked one over six innings, lowering his season ERA to 1.71.
