Wong and Filion named Pioneer Energy OUA athletes of the week
HAMILTON, Ont. - The following athletes have been named Pioneer Energy Ontario University Athletics (OUA) Athletes of the Week for the period ending October 13, 2013.
Each Pioneer Energy OUA Athlete of the Week will receive a gift card and a dri-fit T-shirt, courtesy of Pioneer Energy.
FEMALE: Steffi Wong, University of Toronto Varsity Blues, Tennis
Steffi Wong was a major factor for the Varsity Blues women’s tennis team winning their 10th OUA title this past weekend (Oct. 11-13) at Mayfair Park. A sixth-year veteran of the team, Wong was a triple winner, claiming gold in the No. 2 singles flight, the No. 1 doubles flight, as well as Toronto’s title. The Unionville, Ont., native and dentistry major was dominant on the court all weekend and did not drop a set throughout the tournament, defeating McMaster’s Shivanie Skandarahah 6-0, 6-3, York’s Julia Kedrzycki 6-0, 6-1 and topping Montreal’s Karine Bourdages 6-4, 6-1 in the finals. Wong was paired with teammate Aya Bara in doubles action, and beat York’s Valerie Ushanova and Kedrzycki 8-6 in the finals. She earned OUA all-star honours for the second straight season.
MALE: Ian Filion, Wilfrid Laurier University Golden Hawks, Baseball
Starting pitcher Ian Filion of Whitby, Ont., threw a no-hitter for the Golden Hawks in a 12-0 win over the Toronto Varsity Blues on Saturday. The fourth-year economics major faced only one batter higher than the minimum, walking one, while striking out three to lower his season ERA to an impressive 1.71. The no-hitter was just the second in the history of the Golden Hawks' program and clinched Laurier a spot in this weekend’s OUA Championship tournament.
