OUA By The Numbers
450 – Wins for Brock’s baseball team. The Badgers won their 450th game on Saturday (Sept. 28) in a two-game sweep of the Waterloo Warriors. The milestone includes non-conference games, but is an impressive feat for the 19-year-old program. The Badgers are 20-5 overall and 13-4 in conference play this season. They are currently in a three-way tie for first place in the OUA with Guelph and Western.
2 – Undefeated OUA football teams. The No. 1 Western Mustangs (6-0) and No. 4 Guelph Gryphons (5-0) are the last two undefeated teams in the OUA. Western preserved their spotless record after they beat the No. 5 Queen’s Gaels (4-1) 50-31 on Saturday afternoon, while Guelph topped the Waterloo Warriors 41-19. The Stangs and Gryphs won’t meet in the regular season, so the league could potentially see two undefeated teams. Western has Windsor and York on their schedule while Guelph closes out their season against York, Carleton and Queen’s.
3 – Complete games for Laurier pitcher Brett Van Pelt. Van Pelt pitched his third complete game of the season on Saturday, tossing a one-hit shutout against McMaster while striking out 10. The Whitby, Ont. native lowered his season ERA to 1.42 and rose his strikeout total to 26. That’s the second best ERA in the league, while the strikeout total is tied with teammate Jordan Petruska for tops in the OUA.
4 – Year losing streak snapped. The Laurier women’s rugby team ended a four-year skid with a 13-7 win over the Brock Badgers on Saturday. The Golden Hawks hadn’t won a game since Oct. 9, 2009 – a span of 19 games – when they edged the Waterloo Warriors 7-5. No player from the 2009 season is still on the team today. Samantha Reid (Stouffville, Ont.), Briana Wilson (Markdale, Ont.), Jennifer Gilmour (Waterloo, Ont.) and Peak Performer Chloe Graves (Kitchener, Ont.) powered the Hawks to the win on Saturday.
2 – Upset wins in eight days for the Laurentian men’s soccer team. The Voyageurs beat the Carleton Ravens 2-1 in both games of a home and home series. Second-year forward, and last week’s CIS male athlete of the week, Ian Wolfe scored all four goals for the Voyageurs in the two wins. Just how big were these upsets? Prior to the first game, Carleton was the number one ranked team in the country and now they are unranked.
31:12 – The winning time at the New Balance Vic Matthews Open. Guelph’s Aaron Hendrikx (Parkhill, Ont.) ran the 10k race in 31:12 to claim first place. His teammate, Ross Proudfoot (Sudbury, Ont.), finished 11.6 seconds off the pace for the second place finish. Overall, the Guelph teams placed first in the men’s and women’s races and the reigning CIS champs are the top ranked teams to start the 2013 season.
3,085 – Career yards for Queen’s running back Ryan Granberg. The Sherwood Park, Alta., native ran for 117 yards on Saturday, surpassing Mike Giffin as the Gaels leading all-time rusher. Granberg becomes the second Queen’s player to rush for over 3,000 yards and currently sits 11th all-time in OUA career rushing yards.
