OUA By The Numbers
3 – Undefeated OUA football teams. Through five weeks, No. 2 Western (5-0), No. 3 Queen’s (4-0) and No. 6 Guelph (4-0) hold spotless records. Queen’s and Western battle this week in London, so one team will lose their shot at an undefeated season. Guelph travels to Waterloo to play the Warriors and will face off against Queen’s in week eight.
110 – Points for the No. 1 Guelph women’s rugby team. The Gryphs routed the Laurier Golden Hawks 110-0 over the weekend to cement their status as the country’s top team. Guelph has dominated the matchup with Laurier winning the last five meetings by a combined score of 528-0. The 110 points marked the third time Guelph scored over 100 points on Laurier with the Gryphs posting 125 in 2011.
6 – Game winning streak for the No. 5 Ryerson men’s soccer team. The Rams (6-0-1) are dialed in having won six straight games after a 2-2 draw in their season opener against the No. 6 Carleton Ravens (4-1-2). The Rams currently sit atop the OUA east standings with 19 points and are the only undefeated team in the league.
17:48 – The winning time. Queen’s cross country runner Victoria Coates (Newmarket, Ont.) won the women’s 5km race at the Western International Invitational over the weekend. Coates, an Urban and Regional Planning major, finished 17 seconds ahead of the second placed runner Amanda Truelove (Barrie, Ont.). As a team, Queen’s finished in third place.
232 - Minute shutout streak. The Laurier women’s soccer team maintained a clean sheet for over two games before allowing a goal to UOIT’s Nicole Zajac in Saturday’s 2-1 win. Over the two shutout games, the Hawks went 1-0-1, beating Guelph 1-0 and playing a scoreless draw with Western. Keeper Katrina Ward (Surrey, B.C.) made 13 saves to preserve the streak.
1 – Extra point blocked by Queen’s linebacker Sam Sabourin (Stittsville, Ont.). It’s a tough and painful play, but the Queen’s senior and second-team all-Canadian pulled off the rare feat on Saturday in the Gaels 36-21 win over Ottawa. Sabourin also had an interception, a forced fumble, a pass breakup and two tackles in the win.
.600 – Average for Waterloo first baseman Michael Clouthier over the weekend. The rookie had a sensational weekend at the plate, hitting four home runs and 11 RBI. Clouthier leads the league in homers with six and was aptly named Pioneer Energy’s OUA athlete of the week. The Guelph, Ont., native also drew six walks and added a single and a double over the weekend, but despite his efforts the Warriors finished with a 1-2 record against Western and Toronto.
