ST. CATHARINES, Ont. - The Brock University baseball team (10-1 overall, 5-0 OUA) extended their win streak to nine games as they defeated OUA divisional rival Western Mustangs by the score of 6-4 Thursday night at George Taylor Field.
Western opened the game with RBI doubles from Nolan Anderson and Mitch Grossell in the top of the first off Brock rookie starter Luke Miller (Newmarket, Ont.) to take a 2-0 lead. The Badgers answered with an RBI single from junior Ricky Ferri (St. Catharines, Ont.) in the bottom of the inning, trailing 2-1 after one.
Brock would add one run in both the second and third innings to take a 3-2 lead after three.
In the top of the sixth inning, the Mustangs would add two runs on a two out two-run single by Kaleb Leff scoring both Simon Weisz and Chris Mireault.
In the bottom of the sixth, Brock freshman Justin Gideon (Pickering, Ont.) would score on a sacrifice fly to centerfield by senior Chris Anderi (Tecumseh, Ont.) to tie the game 4-4.
With two on and two out in the bottom of the eighth inning, Ferri would come through with a clutch two-run double making it 6-4 for Brock.
Ferri led the Badgers going 2-for-4 with a double and three RBI, while extending his hit streak to nine games. Phil Steer (Toronto, Ont.) went 1-for 4 with an RBI while Anderi (RBI, Sac Fly), Wil Nicholson (Burlington, Ont.) (1-for-1), Gideon (1-for-3), Tim Lawson (Oakville, Ont.) (1-for-3) and Jordan Grant (Mississauga, Ont.) (1-for-4) rounded out the offense.
Leading the Mustangs was Anderson who went 3-for-4 with an RBI. Weisz was 2-for-3 with two runs scored while Leff finished with one hit and two RBI. In his return to Niagara, former Badgers captain and MVP Cameron Graham went 0-for-4. Last season former Badgers captain Craig Jacques also went 0-for-4 in his return to Brock as a member of the Mustangs.
Brock starter Luke Miller threw five complete innings allowing two runs on seven hits while striking out one. Freshman Jeff Baggaley (Whitby, Ont.) threw 1 1/3 innings of shutout ball with two strikeouts in relief to pick up the victory. In the ninth, closer Phil Owen (Richmond Hill, Ont.) retired the side striking out two of the three batters he faced for his fourth career save.
Western starter Christian Davies went six complete innings allowing four runs on three hits while striking out four and walking seven. Derek Chiu suffered the loss allowing two runs on three hits over two innings of work.
The Badgers next action is this weekend on the road against the Guelph Gryphons (Sept. 14) and Western Mustangs (Sept. 15).

ST. CATHARINES, Ont. - The Brock University baseball team (9-1 overall, 4-0 OUA) defeated the Waterloo Warriors 11-1 in their OUA home opener Wednesday night at George Taylor Field.
Prior to the game, the Brock Badgers Family held a moment of silence for Brock women's rugby player Margo Taylor Ward who Brock University lost after a year long battle with lukemia.
In attendance to throw out the ceremonial first pitch for the Badgers OUA regular season home opener was local MP Rick Dykstra.
"This was another good victory for us," said head coach Jeff Lounsbury. "(Starting pitcher) Paul (McKenna) pitched a great game in his first appearance of the season and offensively everyone chipped in. We are executing on all the little things that helps win ball games."
McKenna (Oakville, Ont.) was outstanding throwing seven complete innings allowing one run (unearned) on one hit while striking out five. He faced only 24 batters over seven innings of work.
On offense, Brock continued to produce as they scored 11 more runs for a league leading 43 runs over their first four conference games. The Badgers got two runs in the first and two in the fifth before adding four in the sixth on route to a 10-run victory.
Leading the way was newcomer Phil Steer (Toronto, Ont.) who went 2-for-4 with two doubles, three RBI and one stolen base. Freshman James Roffey (Guelph, Ont.) contributed with two hits going 2-for-4 with three RBI while senior Chris Anderi (Tecumseh, Ont.) went 2-for-5 with a double and stolen base.
Junior Ricky Ferri (St. Catharines, Ont.) extended his hit streak going 1-for-3 with an RBI and stolen base. Rounding out the offense was Jordan Grant (Mississauga, Ont.) (1-for-4, 2 RBI), Wil Nicholson (Burlington, Ont.) (1H), Justin Gideon (Pickering, Ont.) (1H) and Ben Kirby (Burlington, Ont.) (RBI, Sac Fly).
Brock returns to action Thursday night at 7 p.m. when they host the Western Mustangs at George Taylor Field.
