Sunday semifinals set after flurry of action on Day 2
TORONTO, Ont. – The final four is set for Sunday’s semifinals at the OUA badminton championship, hosted by the Ryerson Rams.
Winners of their pools, the Western Mustangs (4-0) and Toronto Varsity Blues (3-0) received byes straight to Sunday’s semifinals.
In playoff crossover action, the Waterloo Warriors squared off against the McMaster Marauders in one quarter-final while the Ottawa Gee-Gees took on the Ryerson Rams with a berth to the semifinals on the line.
McMaster used strong play from their men’s singles and mixed doubles athletes to earn a 4-0 advantage before finishing off the Warriors with a single win in women’s singles and men’s doubles to claim the match 6-4. The Marauders will now face the Mustangs in one semifinal.
The host Rams looked poised to better their sixth-place finish from a year ago after finishing second in their pool and taking on the Gee-Gees in the quarter-final, but it was the Ottawa team who dominated the play. Ottawa swept the men’s and women’s singles play before adding two victories in mixed doubles to secure a 6-0 victory. The Gee-Gees will take on Toronto in the second semifinal.
Waterloo and Ryerson then squared off in the 5th place match with Waterloo winning that match 6-2.
In placement action the UOIT Ridgebacks earned their first ever team victory at the OUA championships when they defeated Carleton to advance to the 7th place game. The Ridgebacks, playing in their fourth match of the day, ran out of steam as the Queen’s Gaels defeated UOIT 6-4.
The semifinals get under way Sunday at 9:00 a.m. from Ryerson’s Kerr Hall before the bronze medal and championship matches take place at 12:00 p.m.
