Lacrosse wins first-ever home game on Vaso’s Field

OSHAWA, Ont. – The UOIT women's field lacrosse team walked away with an 11-7 victory in their first regular season home game played on Vaso's Field in program history.

For the UOIT Ridgebacks, the opportunity to play at their home field came after an upgrade to Vaso's Field, which was converted to artificial turf over the 2018 summer months. Making their debut with the 11-7 win over the York Lions sweetened the moment.

"Playing at home on Vaso's Field has been a highlight of our season," said head coach Liane Chornobay. "It's always been a dream of ours to bring our program on campus, to not only showcase our team, but to showcase our amazing campus. To see our opponents, umpires, friends and family gather where we have been gathering for years is pretty special."

Sabrina Lyon (Bowmanville, Ont.) opened the scoring for UOIT in the match before back-to-back goals for Brooke Watson (Courtice, Ont.).

Third-year attack Julia Vinkovic (Oshawa, Ont.) followed with of back-to-back goals of her own, before Watson rounded out the first half scoring to give the Ridgebacks a 7-1 lead at the break.

York rebounded in the second half and closed the gap, but a pair of goals by Samantha Gates (Burlington, Ont.), a fourth goal from Watson, third from Vinkovic and one by Dorina Voynov (Oshawa, Ont.) gave the Ridgebacks enough of a lead to hold on for the victory.

In the second match against the Toronto Varsity Blues the Ridgebacks looked down and out early, but rebounded midway through the opening half to close the Varsity Blues lead to three at halftime.

A big second half defensively for Toronto made the difference as the they were able to equal their first half offence, but hold the Ridgebacks to only two goals in the final 30 minutes – en route to a 16-7 victory.

Watson scored three more goals on the day, while Vinkovic notched two. Brianna Nicolas (Ajax, Ont.) and Voynov each scored once.

The Ridgebacks are now off for the week before returning home on Saturday to host another day of OUA action. UOIT will face Western at 8 a.m., followed by the McMaster Marauders at 3 p.m. at Vaso's Field.

  Overall Record: 2-9-0 (W-L-T)
Conference Record: 2-9-0
