UOIT offence comes alive in win over Laurentian

SUDBURY, Ont. - Scoring six unanswered goals, the UOIT Ridgebacks women's hockey team defeated the Laurentian Voyageurs 7-2 on Sunday afternoon in Sudbury.

The win bumps the Ridgebacks record up to 4-6-0-1 (W-L-OTW-OTL) on the season, placing them in a four-way tie with Laurentian, Toronto, and Brock for fifth place in the OUA with 13 points.

After falling behind 2-1 in the opening minute of the second period, UOIT never looked back as five different Ridgebacks scored in the impressive road victory.

Through 11 games played, 19 different Ridgebacks have now recorded a point this season, led by fifth-year captain Kassidy Nauboris (Brampton, Ont.) who ranks first in the OUA in both points and goals, registering 12 and eight respectively. As a Ridgeback she is now second in all-time goals with 39, passing Sarah Worthington's 38. She is also one point back of Worthington for second in all-time points.

Following their northern road swing, UOIT will next head to Waterloo to challenge the Golden Hawks and Warriors next Saturday and Sunday. The back-to-back afternoon contests will both be streamed live on OUA.tv.
  • Fifth-year veteran forward Mariah Wilson (Cobourg, Ont.) opened the scoring for the Ridgebacks just five minutes into the contest, marking her second goal of the season.
Mia Rogers (Keswick, Ont.) tied the game two minutes after the Voyageurs secured their only lead. Rogers' goal was her first of the season and the first of six unanswered goals scored by the Ridgebacks.
Chelsea Ball (Maple, Ont.) banged in a loose puck in front of the Voyageurs net on the powerplay to secure what would become the game-winning goal.
• Second-year forward Megan Johnston (Goderich, Ont.) added an unassisted goal with under three minutes remaining in the second period as an insurance marker. Johnston also picked up two assists for a three-point afternoon.
• Nauboris scored two goals in the third period, including an empty-netter, to round out her four-point day.
Alex Frigon (Dartmouth, N.S.) rounded out the Ridgebacks scoring, sending the puck past the Laurentian goalie with only six seconds left in the game.
• Madison Heeney and Megan Arnott scored for the Voyaguers.
  • Third-year goaltender Celine Tessier (Chapleau, Ont.) earned her first win of the season, recoding 28 saves. Over three starts this season Tessier has posted a .938 save percentage and 2.03 goals against average.
