Ridgeback lose defensive battle to Lancers

OSHAWA, Ont. – After scoring six goals Friday night, the Ontario Tech University men's hockey team were held in check, falling 4-1 to the Windsor Lancers in a Saturday matinee.

The visitors were determined to avoid a repeat of the Friday night game the two teams played. The Ridgebacks prevailed 6-3 in that game. The afternoon tilt was a much more defensive conscious game, as the Lancers jumped out to the 1-0 lead within the first 10 minutes and were content with lock down defence after that.

Much like Friday night, both teams allowed emotions to run high late in the second period, as the final frame began four-on-four. The Ridgebacks weren't deterred from the Lancers defensive style, maintaining a strong push for the tying goal. The home side was rewarded just before the eight-minute mark of the third, but the Lancers showed why they are a top team in the OUA retaking the lead just over two minutes later.

"It was the kind of game we expected," said head coach Curtis Hodgins. "I knew they'd come back at us hard today, we climbed back into the third and they came right back and scored on a two-on-one."

Ontario Tech will travel to Montreal next weekend for a pair of road games, staring with a Friday night tilt against McGill University.
  • Ian Parker opened the scoring at 8:19 of the first, after creating space behind the defence.
Alex Yuill (Wellington, Ont.) evened the game in the third at 7:51, when his point shot eluded traffic in front and floated over the goalie's right shoulder. • Anthony Salinitri regained the Lancers lead at the 10:17 mark of the third.
• Sean Olsen added the insurance marker at 18:06, while Alex Friesen's empty netter sealed the game with just six second remaining.
Michael Bullion (Anchorage, Alaska) made 17 saves in the loss.
• Jonathan Reinhart stopped 29 of 30 for the win.
