Seniors shine in last regular season home game

TORONTO – The Ryerson Rams women's basketball team hit triple digits on the scoreboard for the first time in team history with a big 103-35 victory over the Algoma Thunderbirds on senior night at the Mattamy Athletic Centre.

BOXSCORE

Playing in their final regular season games on Coca-Cola Court, seniors Keneca Pingue-Giles, Mariah Nunes and Siki Jez stole the show. Nunes had a game-high 25 points, Jez added 22, tying her career-high, and Pingue-Giles finished just shy of a triple-double with 24 points, 11 steals and nine rebounds. The 11 steals is a new single-game record at Ryerson.

The Rams dominated from start to finish on Saturday, opening the game with a 19-0 lead. Algoma's first points came on free throws with 4:45 remaining in the quarter. Much of that success came from the Rams press which helped force 36 turnovers throughout the course of the game.

“We changed some things up defensively to work on some different things and we created some turnovers and easy scores which I think is going to be important for us moving forward so that was great,” said head coach Carly Clarke after the game.

After ten minutes the Rams led 29-11 and extended that to 42-22 at the half.

As if the first half defensive display wasn't enough, the Rams limited the Thunderbirds to just 13 second half points – nine in the third quarter and four in the fourth – while piling up 61 second half points of their own.

The Rams scored 49 points off turnovers and shot 45.7% from the floor in the victory.

Algoma's Marlee Ball and Mackenzie Robinson each had a team-high seven points in the loss.

Ryerson improves to 12-3 on the season while Algoma falls to 1-15 on the season. The Rams will close the regular season with four games on the road starting this Wednesday, February 17 in Guelph.
