Ridgebacks lose low-scoring affair to Badgers

OSHAWA, Ont. – The early season struggle continues for the Ontario Tech University women's hockey team as they lost 2-1 Friday night to the visiting Brock Badgers, yet again on the wrong side of a one-goal game.

Given the rough start to the season, the Ridgebacks displayed a reason for optimism Friday night.

"I thought for the most part today we played a really good game," said head coach Justin Caruana. "A full 60 minutes, that was what we were preaching."

The teams skated stride-for-stride for much of the game, but it was the visiting Badgers that opened the scoring. Breaking the scoreless tie just under five minutes into the second period, Brock doubled their lead later in the period carrying a 2-0 advantage into the final frame. The Ridgebacks broke the goose egg late in regulation but could not find the equalizer before time expired.

"We had some chances and couldn't capitalize," said Caruana. "We're playing some good hockey at times, just have to stay positive and work our way through this."

Ontario Tech will have a short turn around as they are set to host No. 6 Guelph Gryphons tomorrow at Campus Ice Centre.
  • Hunter Accursi opened the scoring at 4:30 of the second period with a shot from the left slot area.
• Cassidy Maplethorpe gave the Badgers a two-goal lead at 16:29 of the second on a similar goal.
Jillian Banks (Barrie, Ont.) broke the goose egg with her first of the season, when her shot from the sideboards slid under the goalie's pads.   Brooke Vial (Port Moody, B.C.) made her fifth start this season making 24 saves.
• Jensen Murphy stopped 26 shots in the win.
  Overall Record: 1-12-0
Conference Record: 0-9-0
