WHKY | Voyageurs Fall to Rams in OT

WHKY | Voyageurs Fall to Rams in OT

The Laurentian Voyageurs women hockey team played a very important homecoming game in front of over 500 Voyageurs fans this Saturday October 20th.

The game started off slow as the Voyageurs and Rams were just getting used to the crowd and each other as a total of just two penalties and one score occurred in the first period.

Thankfully the Voyageurs opened the game with a goal from Annie Sheridan, the Voyageurs captain, and the assist was from Morgan McCaan, a huge first goal from the Voyageurs that set them in the right direction and on the path to success.

The second period held most of the scoring action as a total of three goals occurred. The Vees added the second goal scored in the game and that came from Julia Giannitsopoulos scoring her second ever Vees goal and giving the Voyageurs a 2-0 lead in the second period.

Unfortunately, just one minute later, the Rams broke Karen Collins' hot streak as Brooklyn Gemmill beat Collins giving the Rams just a one goal deficit.

Consequently the last regulation time goal was scored by the Rams' Lauren Nicholson who tied up the game giving the Voyageurs a sour taste in their mouth as they had lost the 2-0 lead.

The third period held no scoring but awarding teams power play opportunities. Neither team was able to score as both penalty kill units were too strong. The outcome of the third period was giving both teams an opportunity to win the game in overtime.

Overtime was action packed and tense but the Rams' Julia Patricio capitalized on a Voyaguers turnover, allowing her a breakaway opportunity and eventually beating Karen Collins for the Rams win.

The Voyageurs look to win this coming Sunday October 21st against the Toronto Varsity Blues with puck drop scheduled for 2pm at Countryside Arena.
