MONTREAL -- Defenceman
Dominic Talbot-Tassi of Mascouche, Que., collected four points and
Jan Kaminsky of Kennesaw, Ga., scored twice as eighth-ranked McGill defeated the Brock University Badgers 6-1 in a penalty-filled OUA men's hockey game at McConnell Arena, Saturday.
McGill had a massive 49-18 shots advantage in a game that featured a whopping 158 penalty minutes dished out. The Redmen were assessed 19 infractions for 76 minutes, while the Badgers were sanctioned 22 times for 82 minutes. Despite the plethora of penalties, McGill's tally was well short of the team's single-game record of 172 minutes incurred against Concordia on Jan. 20, 1982. The Stingers were whistled for 182 minutes in that contest as the bitter rivals combined for 354 PIMs.
Talbot-Tassi, a 22-year-old civil engineering sophomore, tallied the eventual game-winner -- a power-play marker at 8:29 of the middle stanza -- and recorded three assists in the contest. The shifty 5-foot-9, 185-pound rearguard leads all OUA defencemen and ranks second in the nation with 21 points in 13 games. Even he couldn't avoid the referee's attention, collecting his first penalty of the season and just his second career infraction in 59 contests overall during his two seasons in a McGill jersey.
Kaminsky, a versatile 6-foot-1, 190-pounder who plays both at forward and on the blueline, netted the only goals of the final period, at 1:14 and 5:00.
Team captain
Patrick Delisle-Houde of Quebec City opened the scoring on the power play at 8:49 of the first, but Brock's
Brody Silk evened it up with the man-advantage at 11:30.
Just 37 seconds after Talbot-Tassi had put the Redmen ahead 2-1 in the second, rearguard
Nathan Chiarlitti of Maple, Ont., tripled McGill's lead on yet another power play.
Alexandre Tremblay of Repentigny, Que., then made it 4-1 to close the period with his first career regular-season goal at 14:38, before Kaminsky sealed the blow-out in the final frame.
A few minutes after Kaminsky's pair gave McGill a comfortable five-goal lead in the third period, the Badgers lost their cool
, sparked by
Josh Timpano who was whistled for instigating a fight with McGill's
Jasmin Boutet that resulted in a wild melee at the 8:27 mark. By the time the dust had cleared in that one stoppage, five players were sent to the penalty box combining for 13 penalties and 86 PIMs. While the initial combatants were engaged, Brock's
Matt MacLeod, a 6-foot-2, 210-pound right-winger, paired up with McGill's
Christophe Lalonde, a 5-foot-9, 188-pound forward. Both were assessed a major and double game misconduct, tallying 25 minutes in penalties apiece (the McGill single-game record is 52 minutes by
Mike Nelson, set on Sept. 27, 1981). Lalonde had entered the soiree with 31 points and 32 PIMs in 34 career games. All game misconducts carry automatic suspensions.
McGill was 3-for-11 on the power play, while the Badgers were 1-for-8.
Redmen goaltender
Louis-Philip Guindon, a kinesiology freshman from St. Joseph du Lac, Que., made 17 saves on 18 shots for the victory and boosted his record to 6-2. Brock's
Alex Brooks-Potts was beaten six times on 49 pucks fired his way as his record tumbled to 0-2.
The Redmen now own a 26-4-2 lifetime record against Brock, having outscored the Badgers 155-73 since their initial meeting in 1988.
McGill (10-2-1), which currently sits tied for first with 21 points in a tight OUA East race, plays on the road next week at UOIT (10-4-0) and Queen's (10-3-1), Nov. 25-26. Brock (7-5-1) hosts Windsor (7-6-1) in Thorold, Ont., on Nov. 25.
REDMEN RAP: McGill Athletics & Recreation will host the fifth annual
Doug McDougall memorial blood donor clinic on Tuesday, Nov. 22, from 9:30 am to 5 pm at Tomlinson Hall, located inside the Sir Arthur Currie Gym at 475 Pine Avenue West. McDougall, who died in 2011, was well-known in the McGill community. His wife
Sally Drury was a member of the ski team during her college days and their four sons all played varsity sports at McGill.
