OSHAWA, Ont. - Battling to a 1-1 Sunday afternoon draw versus the visiting Nipissing Lakers, the UOIT Ridgebacks women's soccer team is now unbeaten over their last seven matches.
It took fourth-year striker
Taijah Henderson (Ajax, Ont.) just three minutes to capture her fourth goal of the season. Taking advantage of a well placed through ball from second-year defender
Julia Listro (Toronto, Ont.), Henderson was afforded plenty of open field, charging in on Lakers keeper Mykaela Volpe before depositing the ball with absolute precision.
Action was even throughout the next 80 minutes with opportunities being created at both ends of the pitch as the Ridgebacks and Lakers tied with seven shots on goal apiece throughout the entirety of the match.
However, in the 88th minute Nipissing found an equalizer. Taking advantage of a foul inside the UOIT 18-yard box, Abby Wroe stepped to the penalty spot and faced off with Ridgebacks second-year keeper
Olivia Tierney (King City, Ont.). Electing to go for the lower left corner, Tierney guessed right, but was only able to get her fingertips to the ball which deflected off the goal post and into the mesh.
Both Tierney and Volpe finished the afternoon with six saves, respectively.
UOIT will hit the road as looking to continue their undefeated streak in Kingston next weekend, challenging the RMC Paladins and Queen's Gaels on Saturday and Sunday. Kick off for both matches is set for 1 p.m.
Overall Record: 7-4-2 (W-L-D)
Conference Record: 6-3-2
Next match: Saturday, Oct. 6 vs. RMC Paladins • 1 p.m. - Kingston, Ont.
