NORTH YORK – Despite outshooting the York Lions 36-20, the UOIT men's hockey team dropped a 3-1 decision to the defending OUA champions Friday night in North York.
Second-year netminder Mack Shields made 35 saves in the Lions' third straight win to start the season, 14 of which were in the third period.
The Lions opened the scoring at 12:30 of the first period with a power play goal by Josh LaFrance, and they added to their lead less than five minutes later when Kyle Campbell scored his second of the season. The score sat at 2-0 after the opening 20 minutes.
The Lions wasted little time extending their lead early in the second as Stefano Pezzetta found the back of the net just five minutes into the frame to make it 3-0.
The Ridgebacks finally got on the board late in the period with
Brennan Roy's (Iroquois Falls, Ont.) tally on a power play, as he blasted a one-timer from the point for his team leading fifth point of the season.
Alex Yuill (Wellington, Ont.) recorded an assist on the play.
A silver lining in the loss was that Roy's tally broke up a 100-plus minute scoreless drought.
UOIT's power play was 1-for-5 on the night while York was 1-for-6. Four of UOIT's six goals this season have come with the man-advantage.
The Ridgebacks are 1-2-0 to start the season and will look to get back to the .500 mark with a road game against the Toronto Varsity Blues (2-0-0) on Saturday night at 7 p.m.
