First-place Gryphons too much for Ridgebacks as playoff race heats up

GUELPH, Ont. – An early goal for the UOIT women's hockey team made it look like Saturday might be the Ridgebacks day, but four unanswered goals, plus a few late insurance markers showed it was Guelph's day as the No. 7 ranked Gryphons went on to a 6-2 victory.

Sunday's game on the road against the York Lions becomes even more important with the loss, despite the final playoff spot being within reach. The Ridgebacks are seven points out of the final playoff spot, but the Brock Badgers currently have two games in hand on UOIT.

The two teams will meet on Friday, Feb. 15 in St. Catharines, which could prove to be critical for both teams. Brock also has one game remaining this weekend as they face the Ryerson Rams.

Next Thursday night the Ridgebacks return home to face the Laurier Golden Hawks for Blue & White Night. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. with lots of prizes being available to be won from Pizza Depot and Bang Bang Burrito.

Friday night the Ridgebacks host the Waterloo Warriors at 3:30 p.m. for their final conference home game of the year.
Kassidy Nauboris (Brampton, Ont.) opened the scoring for UOIT with her 12th goal of the year just 3:45 into the opening period.
• Guelph saw goals by Madison Melo, Stephanie Gave and Karli Shell before the end of the first period as they took a 3-1 lead into the intermission.
Chelsea Ball (Maple, Ont.) scored her fifth of the season in the second period, but Nicole MacKinnon balanced the UOIT goal to ensure the Gryphons maintained a three-goal lead through two periods.
• Shell scored her second of the game, while Kaitlin Lowy scored her 12th of the season to round out Guelph's scoring in the third.
• A positive for the Ridgebacks against the nationally ranked Gryphons was that they were 1-for-2 on the power play.
Briar Hughes (Thornton, Ont.) made 23 saves in the loss for UOIT.
• Aurore Beaulieu turned aside 24 shots in the win for the Gryphons.
