Game Recap: Men's Hockey | | Earl Zukerman

'Hawks swoop down on unsuspecting Redmen in overtime thriller

WATERLOO, Ont -- Andrew Fritsch of Brantford, Ont., scored twice, including the game-winner on a power-play as the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks surprised No.8 McGill 4-3 in double overtime in OUA men's hockey at the Sun Life Arena, Friday.

The "Hawks, who were coming off an 8-4 setback to Brock, avenged a 4-0 loss to McGill last season as the Redmen lifetime record against WLU dropped to 13-12-1.

Mathieu Pompei of Laval, Que., had three points and teammate Daniel Milne of Unionville, Ont., tallied twice for the Redmen, who led 1-0 after one but were outscored 3-0 in the middle stanza on goals by Christian Mroczkowski, Brandon Robinson and Fritsch.

Milne's second of the soiree -- and seventh in 10 league games -- at 8:43 of the third period, sparked a Redmen rally that forced extra time when Pompei struck for his sixth marker to tie it at 3-3 (after pulling the goalie) with just 55 seconds remaining.

However, just 69 seconds after McGill rookie Alexandre Sills was nailed for a disputed tripping call in the second five-minute overtime period, Fritsch connected with the winner at 3:40 of the fifth period on a nifty three-way passing play that resulted in a blast from the top of the faceoff circle.

McGill, which dominated the first and third periods, had a 34-24 edge in shots. The went 0-for-2 on the power-play, while Laurier was 1-for-2.

'Hawks netminder Colin Furlong made 21 saves for the win, improving his record to 4-3. McGill rookie Louis-Philip Guindon made 20 saves and took the loss, dropping to 5-2. His goals-against average dropped to 2.44 and his save percentage now sits at .903.

McGill (7-2-1) plays at Waterloo (3-5-2) on Saturday (Nov. 12) at 4 p.m. in a game that will be webcast on OUA.tv.

REDMEN RAP: Mathieu's Pompei's s three points left him in second place among OUA scoring leaders with a 6-14-20 record in 10 contests, two points behind Carleton's Michael McNamee... McGill defenceman Dominic Talbot-Tassi was held pointless for only the fourth time in 10 games. He sits second among OUA blueliners with 14 points, including 13 assists, one point behind York's Derek Sheppard (11GP: 4-11-15)... The Redmen are ranked 10th of 20 OUA teams in power-play percentage (18.2%) and are 17th in penalty-killing with a success-rate of 78.3 per cent.
