Ridgebacks unable to get offence going against nationally ranked Varsity Blues

OSHAWA, Ont. – The Ontario Tech University women's hockey team could not find their offence in a 2-0 loss to No. 8 ranked Toronto Varsity Blues to end their first weekend of OUA action.

After a 4-2 loss in their home opener, the Ridgebacks began the game with a high compete level, skating with the nationally ranked Varsity Blues squad. A strong defensive effort helped the home team to finish the opening frame tied 0-0.

It was a slight struggle during the second period as Toronto broke the deadlock just over a minute in. The teams traded chances, but it was the visitors that controlled the game heading into the last 20 minutes.

"We had a pretty good game on the whole," said head coach Justin Caruana. "I think the difference today was we had some opportunities and didn't capitalize. They had a couple opportunities and they put it in the back of our net."

Trailing by two with time winding down, Ontario Tech had constant pressure trying to spoil the shutout, but could not solve the Varsity Blue's goaltender. The Ridgebacks will faceoff against another nationally ranked team next weekend when they travel to Toronto to play the No. 10 York Lions.
  • Natasha Athanaskos gave Toronto the lead just 1:08 into the second period.
• Taylor Trussler doubled the visitors lead burying her shot from the high slot at 9:51 of the second.
Brooke Vial (Port Moody, B.C.) had 35 saves in the loss.
• Madeline Albert stopped all 17 shots she faced.
  Overall Record: 1-5-0
Conference Record: 0-2-0
