Game Recap: Men's Hockey | | Ryne Bondy

Rose a thorn in Gaels' side as Redmen pucksters rally late for road win to collect milestone 1,000th lifetime victory

KINGSTON, Ont.– David Rose of St. Hubert, Que., scored two third period goals in the last five minutes, including the game-winner with just 50 seconds left in regulation time, as No.2-ranked McGill rallied for a 3-2 come-from-behind victory over Queen's in OUA men's hockey at the Memorial Centre, Saturday.

It marked McGill's 30th consecutive conquest over the Gaels since their last loss 11 years ago, in a 5-2 setback on home ice, Feb. 6, 2004. The Redmen improved to 124-50-2 in 176 lifetime meetings with Queen's since these teams first crossed paths way back in 1895. The win in Kingston also marked a milestone victory for McGill against Canadian university teams, improving their all-time record to 1,000-932-127 for a winning percentage of .517

A long, high-arcing pass from defenceman Samuel Labrecque landed on Rose's stick as he entered the offensive zone and led to the winning goal. Rose, a fourth-year winger, also added an assist on a second period power-play goal from Patrick Delisle-Houde and now sits second in CIS scoring with 26 points in 15 games.

"To get beat on a bad bounce in a game, you never want to do that," said Gaels head coach Brett Gibson in his post-game comments to the media. "It's a sickening feeling".

Labrecque finished with two assists and continues to lead the CIS scoring race with 29 points, 13 of them goals.

The victory was a key one for McGill, which improved to 14-2-0 and moved into sole possession of first place in the OUA East with 28 points, one point ahead of UQTR (13-2-1).

After a scoreless opening period, which had the Redmen outshooting Queen's 9-8, the power play units went to work in the middle stanza. First to strike was Delisle-Houde at the 15:46 mark with helpers from Labrecque and Rose.  The Gaels answered right before the buzzer with an Eric Ming 5-on-3 power play marker at 19:45.

The man-advantage situations continued to click in the third period with Ming adding his second PP goal of the game at the 10:06 mark but Rose and the Redmen added a CIS-leading 30th power play marker just five minutes and six seconds later to force a 2-2 deadlock.

With less than a minute remaining in a game that appeared headed to overtime, Rose broke down the right wing, and made no mistake firing a shot past all-Canadian netminder Kevin Bailie to secure the win for McGill.

Bailie, who leads the CIS this season with a .946 save percentage and 1.79 goals-against average, stopped 29 of the 32 shots he faced while McGill netminder Jacob Gervais-Chouinard turned aside 31 for his CIS leading win on the season and improved to 14-1

Both teams were 2-for-6 on special teams.

McGill (14-2-0) returns to action Wednesday night when they host the UQTR (13 -2-1)at 7 p.m. in a battle for first place. The Redmen won the only regular reason matchup between the two teams 5-4 in overtime while UQTR took both pre-season bouts (3-2 in OT and 4-1) back in September. The Gaels, who dropped to 8-4-0, will have to wait until Friday when they host Toronto (6-7-2).

NOTE: The game also served as a fundraiser for both, the Carley's Angels and Princess Margaret foundations, in honour of Queen's student Carley Allison, who passed away earlier in the year. Aproximately $2,100 was raised during the contest.
