MONTREAL -- Team captain
Patrick Delisle-Houde scored three times and
Mathieu Pompei collected four points as McGill doubled the Ottawa Gee-Gees 6-3 in OUA men's hockey, Friday, at McConnell Arena.
The game was part of Homecoming Week on the McGill campus and Toronto Maple Leafs head coach
Mike Babcock, a former all-star rearguard at McGill from 1983 to 1987, was among about 75 Redmen hockey alumni on hand and performed the ceremonial face-off.
"It was a good team effort, everything went well, especially in the last period," said Delisle-Houde, a fifth-year forward from Quebec City, who leads the OUA with seven goals in six games and needs 13 more appearances to break
Paul Barber's 30-year-old school record for most games played overall (187). "We're a young, fast-skating team and when we all pull the rope in the same direction and work hard, good things happen."
Pompei, a senior from Laval, Que., tallied once and added three helpers to move into fourth among OUA scoring leaders with a 2-9-11 record in six contests.
Forward
Mathieu Newcomb of Grand-Digue, N.B., had a pair of goals in the loss for the Gee-Gees, whose record fell to 1-6.
The Gee-Gees took the lead just 3:32 into the game, when Antoine Pouliot of Lévis, Que., batted a loose puck in the slot past McGill goaltender
Jacob Gervais-Chouinard.
Daniel Milne tied things up for the Redmen at 12:14 of the first period on the man advantage, and the two teams entered the first intermission deadlocked at 1-1. Delisle-Houde's goal five minutes into the second period, off a defensive-zone turnover, gave the Redmen the 2-1 lead that they took into the final stanza.
Newcomb tied things up at two on a powerplay marker just 2:32 into the third period, but three McGill goals in just over six minutes -- by rookie
Guillaume Gauthier, Delisle-Houde and Pompei -- snuffed out the Gee-Gees' momentum. The Ottawa forward added another powerplay marker late, after pulling their goalie, which was canceled out by Delisle-Houde's shorthanded marker just 39 seconds later.
Gervais-Chouinard turned aside 30 of 33 shots for his first win of the season between the pipes for McGill.
Graham Hunt took the loss for Ottawa, conceding six goals on 38 shots.
The Redmen, who improved their record to 4-2 on the season, went 2-for-4 on the power-play and killed off five of seven man-disadvantage situations. The two teams battle again in the national capital on Saturday at 7 p.m.
