UOIT to host a playoff game for the first time in program history

NORTH BAY, Ont. – The UOIT men's soccer team clinched their first home playoff game in program history on Sunday with a 2-0 victory over the Nipissing Lakers.

Finishing the year in fourth place, their highest ranking in program history, the Ridgebacks are in position to host the fifth place Laurentian Voyageurs in the opening round of the playoffs on Wednesday, Oct. 25 at 6 p.m. at the Oshawa Civic.

"I am really proud of the guys for being able to rebound after not reaching the playoffs last year to accomplishing new milestones including hosting our first home playoff game," said head coach Peyvand Mossavat. "It is good to see results like this with a lot of rookies in the lineup while our seniors continue to lead the program to new heights. I also want to thank coach Ramin, Steve and the rest of the staff for really leading the way with the program especially while I was away at FISU. Their commitment and love for this program is unmatched."

UOIT had the upper hand on Laurentian in their season series, playing to a 1-1 draw in Oshawa followed by a 1-0 victory in Sudbury on Saturday.

The Ridgebacks set program records for most wins (8) and points (27) in a season, while allowing the fewest goals against (13) in a year. UOIT ended the year with an 8-5-3 conference record, earning at least a point in eight of their last nine games.

In Sunday's win over Nipissing, veteran George Meditskos (Toronto, Ont.) was the hero as he scored two second half goals to lead the Ridgebacks to victory.

Nicholas Miller (Oshawa, Ont.) needed to make just one save for the clean sheet. He is third in OUA save percentage at .824 on the year.

UOIT advanced to the playoffs twice in program history, going 1-1 in the opening round of the postseason with their win coming against the Carleton Ravens in 2014.
