MHKY | Voyageurs Down Varsity Blues for First Victory
The Laurentian Voyageurs mens team played this Saturday evening against the visiting Toronto Varisty Blues. Just as their female counterparts, the men handled a crowd of over 800 patrons looking for some ever so exciting Vees hockey.
The first period did not disappoint as it only took a few minutes for the Vees to take advantage of a Blues penalty. Scott Kirton of the Blues took a tripping penalty which Nicolas Dionne, the Vees captain, capitalized on with the assistance of Paul-Antoine Deslauriers and Xaiver Couture. But the Blues did not retreat as the increased the pressure and netted the equalizer just four minutes later. Kevin Lavoie was able to beat the Vees Michael Giugovaz with the assistance of Joey Manchurek.
The second period saw an ever so energetic Voyageurs squad that was not afraid to lay the body and show the Blues an energetic Voyageurs welcome. The welcome did not leave the Blues phased at all as they as well sent back the intensity both on the ice and with the puck.
The Blues sent a total of 16 shots onto the Voyageurs Giugovaz, almost double the shots that the Voyageurs fired at Fredric Foulem.
Just as the later periods in the game there was a lack of scoring and penalties in the third period but instead a showing of extreme physicality and skill. After a result in tie in regulation time. The Voyageurs very own Giugovaz racked up a total of 49 saves at the end of regulation, keeping the Vees in the game.
Overtime resulted in the common theme of the night being a lack of scoring both teams had multiple opportunities but the Voyageurs' Giugovaz and arguably first star of the night turned away many fantastic Blues scoring chances giving the Voyageurs another kick at the can in a shootout.
Jacob Smith, scoring the winning goal ending the scoring drought in a shootout and bringing the Vees the first home victory and a huge win in front of a huge home crowd.
