MADS-House at Warrior Field: Warriors top Lions in Penalty Kicks

Box Score It was a night to remember at Warrior Field as the women's soccer team defeated the York Lions 1-0 in penalty kicks to advance to the OUA quarter-finals. Keeper Madison McDonald (Kitchener/) was incredible all night long while shining the brightest in the penalties with two incredible stops as the Warriors outlasted the Lions 3-1 in the penalty kicks.

The two teams went toe-to-toe for 120 minutes but neither could find twine.  The best chance came for the Warriors in the dying minutes of regulation time as Ainsleigh Sedore (Barrie/) slid past the Lions defender and put a good strike on the ball but York's keeper Taylor Grant came up huge save to keep it locked at zero's.  York had their opportunity in the first extra time period, with a breakaway chance but McDonald reacted perfectly to make the diving stop adding to a spectacular night for the keeper.

As the teams got ready for the penalties it what was a scene from a movie as the loud and rumbustious Warriors fans moved their way from the bleachers to the sidelines to take in the penalties up close, and boy were they treated to a show.

Aysun Osmansoy (Waterloo/) stepped up first and put the Warriors up 1-0 on a cracking strike that got past a diving Grant.  York made it 1-1 before the goaltenders took over with two incredible stops each, including McDonald diving to her left both times to keep the penalties all even at one.

Ciara Dunne (Waterloo/) then stepped up and in similar fashion to Osmansoy's strike, fired it past Grant to her right, a crucial tally and eventual game winner.  York then missed the net with their next kick giving Hannah Rempel (Waterloo/) the chance to clinch the win, and the poised midfielder did just that with a rocket, sending the Warriors and their fans into a fury.

The Warriors will now face the Western Mustangs on Sunday in their OUA quarter-final match.
