Game Recap: Men's Hockey | | Erica Bessell - UOIT Sports Information

Ridgebacks scoring comes alive in 7-2 victory over RMC

OSHAWA, Ont. - Campus Ice Centre may need to replace the bulbs in the goal lamp as the UOIT men's hockey team wracked up seven goals in their win over the RMC Paladins on Saturday night.

The last time that the Ridgebacks recorded seven goals in a game was back in December 2016, when again they were facing off with the Paladins and recorded a 7-2 victory.

Rookie Austin Eastman (Lindsay, Ont.) recorded his second multi-point game of the season, adding another two goals and an assist tonight. He now has six points over four regular season games.

The game started off in RMC's hands when they came out strong, scoring just minutes into the first period.

An equalizer goal by the Ridgebacks midway through the first hinted at a shift in momentum for the home team.

The Ridgebacks then came out flying next period scoring four of the seven goals in the second and shutting out the Paladins. Another two goals through the final frame would put the game away for the Ridgebacks and they would come away with their third win of the season.
  • Veteran forward Alex MacDonald opened the scoring for the Paladins when he finished on a nice tic-tac-toe play from his line mate Rhett Willcox.
• Eastman got the equalizer for the Ridgebacks in the first period, firing the puck over the shoulder of the Paladins netminder. He also went on to get the sixth goal for the Ridgebacks, walking his way through two defenders and beating the goalie.
• Rookie Matthieu Gomercic (Winnipeg, Man.) recorded his first OUA goal in the second period, banking in a rebound off a shot from the point by Alex Yuill (Wellington, Ont.).
• Veteran Jordan Ross (Kronau, Sask.) capitalized on a feed from Eastman which gave the Ridgebacks the 3-1 lead midway through the second.
• Ridgebacks captain Danny Elser (Hopewell Junction, N.Y.) undressed the goaltender when he came flying down the ice and put the puck five hole, solidifying their lead.
• Third-year veteran Anthony Latina (Scarborough, Ont.) scored the final goal of the second period, taking the puck across ice, stretching the goalie from post-to-post and beating him far side.
• Paladins rookie Liam Stagg got on the board late in the game when he gave them their second goal in the third period.
• Veteran Kyle Locke (Aurora, Ont.) sealed the deal for the Ridgebacks when he netted their seventh goal with just two minutes left to go in the third.
    • Michael Bullion (Ancorage, Alaska) got his first home start for the Ridgebacks earning himself the win and totaling 18 saves.
• Paladins goaltenders Austin Hannaford and Brad Van Schubert split the night, with Hannaford tallying 35 saves and Van Schubert earning eight.
