OUA By the Numbers (Jan. 17)
02/08/08 – The Queen’s ARC witnessed an upset this past weekend, as the Queen’s Gaels men’s basketball team earned a decisive win, 84-66, over the No. 7 uOttawa Gee-Gees. Pulling off the victory in front of a packed house, the win is the first for the Gaels in their last 17 meetings against the Gee-Gees, dating back to February 8th, 2008.
248 – The Windsor Lancers women’s volleyball team has played the most sets in the OUA thus far, but that hasn’t affected the play of OH Carleigh Bailey. Following two tough games against Toronto and McMaster, the 5th year veteran leads the OUA with 248 digs – 103 more than the next athlete – while also sitting atop the conference in digs per set with 5.64.
52 – It was a winning weekend for the UOIT Ridgebacks men’s hockey team, thanks in large part to Kingston native Ben Blasko. Blasko’s homecoming against RMC saw him tally a point on all four Ridgebacks goals, including three assists. Blasko now has 52 helpers to his name, becoming just the fifth player in school history to register at least 50 in his career.
37.99 – The Windsor Lancers track & field team hosted their annual Windsor Can-Am Classic this week, which saw numerous performances top the national rankings. In particular, the Lancers very own Kelsey Balkwill ran an impressive 37.99 seconds in the women’s 300m race, crushing the previous meet record, while surpassing the U SPORTS auto-standard. Her new time ranks her 1st in the country and 15th all-time in Canada in the event.
14 – The Carleton Ravens women’s basketball team has been nothing short of dominant during this regular season. Just this past week, the women’s squad solidified their OUA championship over Queen’s with another victory over the Gaels, as well as a win over York, pushing their record to 14-0 and continuing their trek as one of only two unbeaten teams left in all of U SPORTS this season.
11 – While playing host to some of the OUA’s best wrestlers this past weekend at their annual Brock Open, the Badgers proved once again why they rank so highly in Canada. The No. 1 women’s team and No. 2 men’s team both claimed victory on home soil, racking up a total of 11 gold medals on the day (5 from the men, 6 from the women).
5.01 – Not to be outdone by the track, the field events at the Windsor Can-Am Classic brought plenty of excitement to the table as well, most notably in the men’s pole vault. Sam Adams and Daniel Gleason, representing the York Lions and Windsor Lancers respectively, were tied at the conclusion of the event at a mark of 5.01m. The result required a jump-off between the two men that ultimately ended in a tie. Both men surpassed the U SPORTS auto-qualifying mark of 4.81m and are now both ranked 2nd in the country.
1 – Thanks to a hard-fought, five set victory over the Queen’s Gaels, the York Lions men’s volleyball team kept their winning ways going and moved into sole possession of 1st place in the OUA East Division. The Lions, led by Andrew Shotbolt’s impressive play, would round out their weekend with a second win to stretch their streak to five and extend their first place cushion to four points over Ryerson.
0:07 – The Guelph Gryphons hosted the Laurier Golden Hawks women’s basketball team last Wednesday in a divisional battle for 5th spot in the OUA West. The game lived up to the hype down to the final seconds, as the Gryphons edged out the purple & gold by a score of 64-63. To seal the win, Guelph’s Megan Brenkel sunk two free-throws with just 0:07 left on the clock. Guelph now sits tied in 5th spot with Laurier at 12 points apiece.
