OUA By the Numbers (Mar. 21)
42 – In only his second season with the Concordia Stingers, men’s hockey forward Anthony Beauregard had himself a season for the ages, as he was named the 2018 U SPORTS Most Valuable Player on Thursday evening. Pouring in 19 goals while adding 41 assists on the season, the first-team All-Canadian is the first recipient of the Sullivan Trophy for the Stingers since 1976 – a 42-year span – when former Stinger and current assistant coach Jim Corsi accepted the award.
15 – Ending her rookie campaign on a high note, Nipissing Lakers women’s hockey player Maria Dominico stands alone in the record books after being named the 2018 U SPORTS Rookie of the Year. Backed by her 15-goal campaign – good enough for a tie for second in the nation – the U SPORTS All-Rookie team honouree becomes the first player in Laker program history to receive a major national award.
6 – The McMaster Marauders men’s volleyball team continued their hot streak on the national stage. After winning their quarterfinal clash and falling just short in their semifinal match, the host school was able to sweep the Alberta Golden Bears 3-0 at the U SPORTS Championships this past weekend to capture the bronze medal. The third place finish marked their sixth straight podium spot in the championship event (two silver, four bronze).
2 – Coming away with their second U SPORTS medal in program history, the Western Mustangs women’s hockey team fell to the No. 1 nationally ranked Manitoba Bisons 2-0 in the national final on Sunday. As the tournament hosts, a flurry of 1,600 fans came to watch the purple and white play in only their second such final, having won their first U SPORTS banner three years ago (def. McGill 5-0).
1 – There is no number more important to the Ryerson Rams women’s volleyball team than No. 1, ending their dream season as U SPORTS champions with a 3-1 win over Alberta. Not only did the Rams roll through regular season and playoff competition in undefeated fashion, but they did so en route to the school’s first ever national championship – in any sport. Head Coach Dustin Reid was commended for his efforts in lifting the program as he was named U SPORTS Coach of the Year, also a first for the Rams, while All-Canadian Theanna Vernon was named MVP of the championship event for her strong play at middle blocker.
