OUA By the Numbers (Oct. 11)
468 – In the final tune-up event of the season, the University of Toronto Varsity Blues managed an impressive showing at their home tournament. UofT took home top honours on the team side of things, combining to shoot a score of 468 (40 strokes clear of second place Queen’s), while also bringing home gold and silver in individual play for the event (1st – Ellice Hong (152); 2nd – Laura Upenieks (154)).
233 - The Queen's Gaels put up an impressive offensive showing against the Warriors, thanks in large part to Jake Puskas' 233 all-purpose yards. Puskas' night included OUA career high marks in rushing yards (175), receiving yards (58), and touchdowns (4).
64 – After another successful weekend of play from the top seeds in the OUA’s East Division, the UOIT and Ottawa Women’s Soccer teams have registered a sizzling 64 combined points on the season and are separated by just four points in the standings (34 and 30, respectively). The pair of top-ten USPORTS squads have also combined for a 20-1-4 record on the season, collecting a total of 61 goals and surrendering just 15.
18 - Thanks to his 5-for-5 showing against Carleton, Western Mustangs' kicker Mark Liegghio has now connected on 18 consecutive field goals, a streak that started in the team's Week 4 contest with the Windsor Lancers and is highlighted by a long of 46 yards.
13 - The McMaster defense has shone brightly all season, and thanks to another stingy performance against the Varsity Blues in the first quarter, the Marauders were able to extend their streak of consecutive quarters without allowing a touchdown once more to a final total of 13 - one that spanned their previous three games.
6 – After another impressive showing at the OUA Tennis Championships, the Western Mustangs Women’s team captured their sixth banner in program history (dating back to their first in 1972-73). The title is also the school’s second straight, which they earned with a hard fought 4-3 win over the No. 1 ranked York Lions in the gold medal match.
5 - In yet another display of offensive prowess, Laurier QB Michael Knevel threw for five touchdowns in the Golden Hawks' 53-31 win - highlighted by a pair of home run plays to Kurleigh Gittens Jr. of 75 and 80 yards, respectively - to give the reigning Yates Cup MVP an OUA-leading 15 for the season.
1 – For the first time in school history, the York Lions Women’s Rugby team has advanced to the OUA semifinals. To accomplish the first-time feat, the Lions needed to overcome a back and forth affair against a talented Brock squad, but managed to come out on top by a 34-24 score thanks to tries from five different players.
