OUA By the Numbers (Nov. 15)
2005 – It was a winning weekend for the RMC Paladins men’s hockey team, who picked up their first two victories of the season in fine fashion. Not only did the Paladins come away with back-to-back wins against the No. 7 ranked UQTR, but in doing so, they earned their first wins against the team since December, 2005.
118 – The Carleton Ravens men’s basketball team cracked the 100-point plateau for the first time this season in their lopsided victory over Waterloo this week. While they did the same in their following game, the Ravens’ 118 point output on November 10th was the program’s largest regular season scoring output since a 120-point onslaught in 2012 (v. RMC Paladins).
75 – The Western Mustangs’ potent offence was in full effect on Saturday in the 110th Yates Cup. The Mustangs, who put up 66 points in their semifinal performance, outdid themselves, along with every other past Yates Cup participant by erupting for 75 points on the day. This mark set a new scoring record for the OUA’s championship game, eclipsing the previous record of 65 (Windsor Lancers, 1975).
31 – The Mustangs’ victory in the 110th Yates Cup marked the program’s 31st overall in the OUA’s championship game, sitting them comfortably atop the record books in that regard. The next closest teams on the list are Toronto (24) and Queen’s (23).
15 – The Ryerson Rams women’s volleyball team sits atop the OUA standings this season with an undefeated record of 5-0. The team has accomplished this sizzling start in dominant fashion. Since losing their first two sets of the season against McMaster (a match they would go on to win 3-2), the Rams have reeled off 15 straight sets to win their five straight games.
15 – The Guelph Gryphons men’s cross country team claimed the national title this past weekend at the U SPORTS championships – their 15th in program history. The win marked the school’s 14th title in the last 19 years, and despite entering with a very similar squad as they did in 2016 – when the team finished 9th – the Gryphons still managed to bounce back in championship-winning fashion.
7 – While Western as a whole is clicking on all cylinders, the team’s standout has been running back Cedric Joseph. After notching four touchdowns in the Mustangs’ semifinal match, the Montreal, Que. native followed that up with a Dalt White Trophy winning performance of three touchdowns (and 250 yards rushing) to give him a total of seven majors in just two postseason games.
6 – Despite having only one steal coming into the game, Ryerson Ram’s forward Sofia Paska put her defensive prowess on display in the team’s 81-58 win over Brock. Paska found herself wreaking plenty of havoc for the Badgers, to the tune of an OUA game-high tying six steals, matching the previous 2017 mark set by York’s Haley Bowie.
6 – It has been a scorching start to the OUA women’s hockey season and two players have made their way to the top of the goals list. Guelph’s Kaitlin Lowy and Queen’s Katrina Manoukarakis each lit the lamp twice in their respective games this weekend and now sit tied atop all OUA goal-scorers with six tallies on the season.
5 – It was a banner performance from the Toronto Varsity Blues women’s cross country team this past weekend at the U SPORTS national championship. Sasha Gollish may have claimed the individual gold medal, but as a whole, the U of T squad had a total of five runners in the top 28, en route to collecting a blistering total of 73 points and sit comfortably ahead of second place Queen’s (92 points).
