BURLINGTON, Ont. – The future of Canada’s national body for university sport was announced Thursday as Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) rebranded the organization U Sports.
“This is a landmark day for us. Effective today, we are U Sports,” said Graham Brown, the CEO of U Sports. “This is an important step towards a total transformation of our organization which started almost a year ago.
“Although the mission and the passion remain the same, the new brand will shine the spotlight on our dedicated student-athletes at our 56 universities across the country. Today’s announcement also aims to create a massive change in the way university sports are consumed in a fast-changing digital era.”
Ontario University Athletics (OUA), which governs university sport in Ontario, will continue to maintain its brand and identity within the Canadian university sports landscape.
OUA will continue to work with U Sports and the other regional associations across the country – Canada West Universities Athletics Association (CWUAA), Réseau du sport étudiant du Québec (RSEQ) and Atlantic University Sport (AUS) – to provide the coverage and exposure that our student-athletes deserve.
Ontario University Athletics and the 20 member institutions deliver 23 sports and 40 provincial championships for over 10,000 student-athletes.
Thursday’s named change was the second since the organization was established as CIAU Central in 1906. In 1961, the name was changed to Canadian Interuniversity Athletic Union before becoming Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) in June 2001.
