Bordeleau and Krantz named UOIT athletes of the year

OSHAWA, Ont. – Kylie Bordeleau (Cambridge, Ont.) and James Krantz (Oshawa, Ont.) were named the University of Ontario Institute of Technology (UOIT) student-athletes of the year on Thursday night at the 10^th annual UOIT Athletic Banquet held at the Regent Theatre in downtown Oshawa.
 
Krantz, a mechanical engineering major, received the male athlete of the year honours to cap off the evening that celebrated the 2015-16 season.
 
He finished the year with the best overall season in golf program history. In five of six tournaments heading into the OUA championship, Krantz finished 12^th or better never shooting a round lower than 76. He picked up a win at the Queen's Invitational with a low round of 65 and was third at the Western Invitational. At the provincial championship held at the Oshawa Golf and Curling Club he finished in the top 20 for the second straight season.
 
Earlier in the evening he was named the golf MVP for the fourth straight season.
 
Other males winning individual team MVP awards included rower Nik Vantfoort (London, Ont.), men's hockey player Brendan O'Neill (Ilderton, Ont.), tennis player Tushar Gaur (Mississauga, Ont.), curler Sam Buckle (Port Elgin, Ont.) and men's soccer player Travis Martin (Whitby, Ont.).
 
For Bordeleau, a health science major, being named the Ridgebacks female athlete of the year capped off a successful year for the women's soccer defender. In November she became the first UOIT soccer player to be named a CIS All-Canadian. Prior to receiving this honour, Bordeleau was named an Ontario University Athletics (OUA) all-star for the third straight season after anchoring the Ridgeback defensive unit that allowed seven goals against in 16 regular season games, which tied them with the York Lions for the conference lead.
 
Also being named team MVPs were rower Daria Ruginis (Burlington, Ont.), tennis player Zsastynne Torne (Ajax, Ont.), dancer Jessica Cohan (Whitby, Ont.), women's hockey player Mikaeli Cavell (Edmonton, Alta.), curler Riley Weagant (St. Thomas, Ont.) and field lacrosse player Taylor Landry (Whitby, Ont.).
 
Women's soccer goalkeeper Helen Frampton (Toronto, Ont.) and men's hockey defenceman Alex Yuill (Wellington, Ont.) were named the freshman athletes of the year just prior to the final awards of the night.
 
Other major award winners included Nate Mitton (Kitchener, Ont. – Men's Hockey) and Joanna Toonders (Williamsburg, Ont.– Women's Rowing), who were named the Dr. Gary Polonsky Leadership Award recipients.
 
Daria Ruginis (Burlington, Ont.) was named the recipient of the Rob Millikin Award, which is presented to the varsity athlete who best exemplifies and displays the following criteria: academic success, passion and heart.
 
Nate Mitton (Kitchener, Ont.) and Chelsea Ball (Maple, Ont.) were the recipients of James-Baun Cup, which is presented to a student on the men's and women's hockey teams who shows commitment, dedication, perseverance, academic responsibility, leadership and is a great teammate in the pursuit of excellence. The Cup is named after Bobby Baun and his long-time friend Don James.
 
Earlier in the night the men's hockey team ended the women's soccer team's three-year streak of winning the team of the year award. The men's hockey program won the first playoff series in program history, 2-1 over the Queen's Gaels and achieved a program-high in wins with 18.
 
Also recognized for his work throughout the season, Michael Penny was named the athletic therapy student trainer of the year.
