Gawne and Courtney named RMC Athletes of the Year
KINGSTON, Ont. – The achievements and successes of RMCC varsity athletes were highlighted throughout the annual Varsity Awards Ceremony, which took place on Wednesday, March 23rd.
KINGSTON, Ont. – The achievements and successes of RMCC varsity athletes were highlighted throughout the annual Varsity Awards Ceremony, which took place on Wednesday, March 23rd.
Adolina Gawne (Piers Island, BC) won her first Kelly Gawne Memorial Cup as RMC Female Athlete of the Year. The fourth year Mechanical Engineering student won bronze in both individual and team sabre events at the 2016 OUA Fencing Championships, as RMC once again finished in second place overall at the event. This award also has significant meaning to Gawne, as it is named in honor of her second cousin, Kelly Gawne.
Matt Courtney (Brockville, ON) was named recipient of the Tommy Smart Cup as RMC Male Athlete of the Year. The third year Honours Business Administration student was named OUA All-Star for a third consecutive season after finishing fourth in the league in scoring and helping lead the men’s rugby team to their second playoff berth in three seasons.
Cassidy Chang (Delta, BC), a fourth year Mechanical Engineering student, was named recipient of the H.R.H. Prince of Wales Cup for her excellence in all four components throughout her college years. The starting setter for the women’s volleyball team has maintained high marks in a demanding academic program, while achieving bilingual status as well as serving in the College’s senior leadership group in the fall of 2015. She was also the recipient of the OUA East Award of Merit in 2015-16, marking a first for the RMC women’s volleyball program.
The Captain Matthew Dawe Memorial Cup is awarded annually to the outstanding male or female ROTP varsity athlete, of any year, who excels in all aspects of College life at RMC. Mathieu Lavallée (Ste-Catherine de la Jacque Cartier, QC) has been an important member of the men’s hockey team
both on and off the ice. The third year History student was able to play through an eye injury, demonstrating his commitment to his team. Being fully bilingual, Mathieu also helps tutor his teammates in both French and English.
Also recognized for their performances this past year were OUA 2nd Team All-Star Kara Stephan from the women’s volleyball team (Top 1st Year Athlete), Olivier Couillard (Top 2nd Year athlete) and keeper Tobin Semple (Top 4th Year Athlete) from the men’s soccer team, and Victoria McCormick from the women`s fencing team (Top Team Captain). The men’s rugby team was also named RMCC Team of the Year, as they posted a regular season record of 4 wins and 4 losses this past fall on their way to a narrow Quarter Final loss to McMaster in November.
