MEN: Ryerson Rams – Basketball
January 2016 will be a month the Ryerson Rams men’s basketball program won’t ever forget.
With a perfect 6-0 record, including wins over the then ranked No. 1 Ottawa Gee-Gees and No. 2 ranked Carleton Ravens, the Rams jumped from No. 5 in the CIS national rankings to top spot for the first time in any sport in school history.
When Ryerson upset Carleton 79-61 on Jan. 22nd, it had been 16 years to the day of the last time Rams defeated the perennial powerhouse Ravens. The Rams weren’t done there as the following night, Ryerson took down the visiting Gee-Gees 87-80 on their way to claiming the No. 1 ranking for themselves.
The high powered Rams averaged 91.6 points per game last month and are the top ranked offence in the conference, averaging 88.5 points per game. In January, Ryerson defeated their opponents by an average of 20 points, while averaging almost 40 percent from beyond the arch.
The Rams are back on the court Wednesday as they look to stretch their winning streak to eight games when they take on the No. 5 ranked Brock Badgers at the Mattamy Athletic Centre. Tipoff is schedule for 8:00pm.
WOMEN: University of Toronto Varsity Blues – Volleyball
One word to describe the month of January for the University of Toronto Varsity Blues? Perfection.
The Blues went a flawless 6-0 last month and did not lose a set in the process, needing just three sets to down Nipissing, York, Waterloo, Ryerson, Queen’s and RMC. In fact, you’d have to go all the way back to Oct. 31 to find the last time the Blues dropped a set.
In January, Toronto averaged 12.44 kills/set and a .285 attack %, both of which were their highest marks from any month this season. Through 14 matches this season, the Blues also lead the conference in aforementioned categories.
Rookie right side Alina Dormann (Ottawa, Ont.) leads OUA in aces/set and ranks 2nd in points per set, while fourth-year setter Maddy Mandryk (Lockport, Man.) ranks second among OUA setters with 9.38 assists/set.
Toronto will look to stretch their win streak to 15 when they travel to Ottawa, Ont. on Saturday to take on the rival Gee-Gees at Montpetit Hall at 2:00pm.
