MALE: McMaster Marauders – Football
By the time the calendar rolled over into October, McMaster found itself first in OUA standings with a perfect 5-0 record and had climbed all the way to fourth in the national rankings.
A stingy Marauders defence allowed just 13 points per game in the month, and was coupled with a well-run offence that produced some spectacular individual plays while averaging 42.8 points per game.
Quarterback Marshall Ferguson led the way on offence, throwing for 1295 yards to go with nine touchdowns and four interceptions.
The strong September also continued into October, as the Marauders defeated the no. 3-ranked Western Mustangs 32-29 in London, and will likely leapfrog their rivals in the CIS Top 10.
Women’s: UOIT Ridgebacks – Soccer
The Ridgebacks women’s soccer team made school history when they became the institution’s first ever varsity sports team to crack the CIS Top 10 rankings.
UOIT found itself ranked ninth on September 16 and climbed all the way up to the no. 5 spot a week later. The team would close out September with a 7-0-2 record, again ranked ninth in the country.
The season started with a 3-2 win over the Ottawa Gee-Gees who are now ranked second in CIS; it is also the Gee-Gees only loss so far this season.
Shannon Lucas and Cassandra Sribny have been a huge part of the team’s success, leading the team with six and four goals respectively in September. Goalkeeper Melissa Linton has provided plenty of support in net as well, allowing just 0.42 goals per game to go along with four clean sheets in the month.
Linton posted two additional shutouts to open October, as the Ridgebacks continued to roll with back-to-back wins against Toronto and Trent.
