BURLINGTON, Ont. – Laura Upenieks has been named Ontario University Athletics (OUA) Peak Performer of the Week, presented by Investors Group, for the period ending October 17th, 2017.
Upenieks made history as she earned her second career individual title in leading the University of Toronto Varsity Blues women's golf team to their sixth straight OUA banner this past weekend in Ottawa.
The Etobicoke, Ont., native broke the OUA women’s golf record, previously held by Waterloo’s Devon Rizzo (147, 2013), shooting an outstanding two-day total of 144 (71, 73), while also winning the Judy McCrae Trophy by the largest margin in championship history. Upenieks finished a whopping 13 strokes ahead of silver medalist Robyn Campbell of the Queen's Gaels (157). The previous record was seven strokes, set in 2013, 2009 and 2005.
Upenieks, now a nine-time OUA all-star, finished the two-day event with a tournament-leading eight birdies. The Blues claimed the OUA banner by 21 strokes over the silver medalist Queen’s Gaels.
