Western’s Campbell, Carleton’s Scrubb honoured as ArcelorMittal Dofasco CIS athletes of the week

OTTAWA (CIS) – Kelly Campbell, a hockey player from Western University, and Philip Scrubb, a basketball player from Carleton University, are the ArcelorMittal Dofasco CIS female and male athletes of the week for the period ending March 15, 2015.

Campbell, a fourth-year management and organizational studies student from St. Thomas, Ont., was named tournament MVP at the CIS championship in Calgary after she helped the Mustangs capture the first Golden Path Trophy in program history. The 5-foot-5 goaltender was nearly perfect during the three-game competition as she allowed only one goal on 94 shots for a .989 save percentage and posted back-to-back shutouts against the top two ranked teams in the country, Montreal and McGill. Campbell, who was named a first-team all-Canadian this season, opened the tournament last Friday with 27 saves in a 3-1 quarter-final win over Moncton, turned aside 28 pucks in a 2-0 semifinal victory against the Carabins on Saturday and completed her dream weekend with a superb 38-save performance on Sunday night as Western stunned the No. 1-seeded Martlets 5-0 in the gold-medal final.    

St. Francis Xavier hockey player Alex Normore and track and field standouts Laurence Beaudet of Sherbrooke and Rachel Francois of Victoria were also nominated for the women’s award.

Scrubb, a fifth-year commerce student from Richmond, B.C., received his second Jack Donohue Trophy as CIS championship MVP after he guided the top-seeded Ravens to their remarkable fifth straight W.P. McGee Trophy triumph, in Toronto. The 6-foot-3 guard was simply sensational in his final weekend in a Carleton uniform as he received game-MVP honours in all three of the Ravens’ contests thanks to his tournament-high 29.3 points and 8.3 assists per outing, including a 29-point, 10-assist double-double in a 93-46 domination of archrival Ottawa in Sunday’s national final. The only three-time player of the year in CIS men’s basketball, Scrubb and older brother Thomas became only the fourth and fifth players in history to end their career with five McGee Trophy titles. 

UNB hockey player Cam Braes, Laval mid-distance runner Charles Philibert-Thiboutot and Alberta hockey player Kruise Reddick were the other male nominees.
