Gilligan, Buciora named IG Wealth Management Athletes of the Week, powered by Planters
Burlington, Ont. – Melissa Gilligan and Anton Buciora have been named IG Wealth Management Ontario University Athletics (OUA) Athletes of the Week, powered by Planters, for the period ending September 16, 2018.
Female Athlete of the Week – Melissa Gilligan (Cornwall, Ont.) –1st Year – Carleton Ravens
The Carleton Ravens gave the home crowd their first taste of women’s soccer action on the year last weekend, and it was newcomer Melissa Gilligan that provided the home opener heroics in both games.
To start her weekend, Gilligan played an instrumental role in the Ravens eventual 1-0 victory, as she earned the match’s lone goal with less than five minutes to play. The first-year midfielder carried the ball with pace down the left side before sidestepping a defender and notching the first goal of her OUA career to put the Ravens ahead for good.
Gilligan clearly got a taste for the heroics on Friday, as she was right back at for a similar encore on Saturday. The Ravens were able to sweep their pair of games with yet another 1-0 final – this time against the Laurentian Voyageurs – anchored by Gilligan’s second goal of the season. The Cornwa6ll, Ontario native finished off the nice pass from teammate Chyenne Bent to put her side up for good in just the 23rd minute, and putting the cherry on top of her memorable weekend.
Male Athlete of the Week – Anton Buciora (Mississauga, Ont.) – 1st Year – RMC Paladins
Scoring your first goal is always a memorable moment, and it is one that RMC Paladins’ Anton Buciora got to experience this past weekend, en route to his Male Athlete of the Week nod.
Buciora scored the first goal of his U SPORTS career when RMC encountered Toronto. The rookie made a great run to get on the end of a lofted through-ball, controlling it around a Varsity Blues defender in one touch before scoring the Paladins’ lone goal of the game.
The goal wasn’t enough to lift his side to victory, but Buciora finding the back of the net has provided yet another bright spot in the Paladins’ season and is a goal he certainly won’t soon forget.
