Wolever, van Schubert named IG Wealth Management Athletes of the Week, powered by Planters
Burlington, Ont. – Jenny Wolever and Brad van Schubert have been named IG Wealth Management Ontario University Athletics (OUA) Athletes of the Week, powered by Planters, for the period ending October 7, 2018.
Female Athlete of the Week – Jenny Wolever (Toronto, Ont.) – 4th Year – Queen’s Gaels
Just as she has done all season long, Queen’s forward Jenny Wolever proved to be the difference-maker for the Gaels with her offensive touch.
With a three-goal performance over the weekend, Wolever has taken over sole possession of the OUA’s goal lead, and is currently tied for the lead in points. Wolever gave herself the edge in the goal-scoring race thanks to an equalizing tally against Trent on Saturday; a goal that helped the Tricolour earn a point in their first match of the weekend. On Sunday, the Toronto native then added to her conference-leading total with a pair of goals, accounting for all of the Queen’s offence in their 2-0 win over UOIT.
Wolever is on a rapid goal scoring pace that has already seen her match last season’s OUA goal leader, Laura Callendar, with 13 goals but in four fewer games. She has four games remaining to surpass that mark and to hold on to her league-scoring title. Her 18 points this season, which is tied for the OUA lead, are also the most since York’s Nour Ghoneim had 18 in the 2015-16 season.
Male Athlete of the Week – Brad van Schubert (Barrie, Ont.) – 1st Year – RMC Paladins
It’s easy to remember your first OUA start, but when it comes to first-year goaltender Brad van Schubert, his debut will be especially memorable.
Settling in for his first ever start between the pipes for the RMC Paladins, van Schubert made 36 saves, including all 21 shots he faced in a third period flurry, to help preserve a 2-1 win for RMC over Concordia in the regular season opener. Not only was the performance critical to the team’s ultimate victory, but the team that van Schubert shut the door on just so happens to be the reigning OUA bronze medalists and top-10 ranked squad nationally.
van Schubert’s tremendous effort gives the Paladins their first win over the Stingers since 2012.
