Morelli, Campbell named IG Wealth Management Athletes of the Week, powered by Planters
Burlington, Ont. – Christina Morelli and Colin Campbell have been named IG Wealth Management Ontario University Athletics (OUA) Athletes of the Week, powered by Planters, for the period ending October 21, 2018.
Female Athlete of the Week – Christina Morelli (Markham, Ont.) – 5th Year – York Lions
York soccer player Christina Morelli capped off an outstanding final season with the Lions by scoring four goals and adding one assist in two Lions victories over the weekend.
In her first game of the weekend, Morelli scored the first goal of the game and the game winner in a 4-3 win over the Windsor Lancers on Friday, with the winner coming in the 88th minute in a dramatic victory. She followed up that performance on Sunday against the Western Mustangs with two goals, including the game winner, and an assist in 5-2 victory.
The win propelled the Lions into second place in the OUA West standings and gives them a first-round bye in the playoffs. Morelli now has a team-leading and career-high ten goals on the season and she finishes the season fifth place overall in the OUA.
Male Athlete of the Week – Colin Campbell (Bateston, N.S.) – 5th Year – Nipissing Lakers
It was a jam-packed week on the ice for the Nipissing Lakers, and one player in particular that took advantage of the three-game week was Colin Campbell, who recorded eight points to propel him to this week’s OUA Male Athlete of the Week selection.
Campbell started the week off with a pair of goals – the team’s second and third on the night – in a victory over Laurentian on Tuesday. He followed that up with two more goals Friday night against Toronto. After the Blues jumped out to a 3-0 lead, Campbell accounted for two of Nipissing’s three goals thereafter, helping the Lakers put up a valiant effort in the eventual one-goal loss. Campbell went from scorer to distributor in the team’s weekend finale, meanwhile, as he set up three teammates on four different goals to help power Nipissing to a 6-2 win over Western on Saturday.
The fifth-year forward now sits in a tie for fifth in the OUA in both goals and points.
