Strassburger, Jacome named IG Wealth Management Athletes of the Week, powered by Planters
Burlington, Ont. – Sam Strassburger and Brendan Jacome have been named IG Wealth Management Ontario University Athletics (OUA) Athletes of the Week, powered by Planters, for the period ending October 14, 2018.
Female Athlete of the Week – Sam Strassburger (Schreiber, Ont.) – 5th Year – Nipissing Lakers
Sam Strassburger had a big weekend for the Nipissing Lakers to help the team kick off their campaign with back-to-back wins against tough competition.
The fifth-year talent started her season with a helper in the team’s 2-1 overtime win against the UOIT Ridgebacks. Strassburger found teammate Jade Gauthier to earn the primary assist on the Lakers’ first goal of the year, giving them the early lead in their opener.
She took things up a notch in the team’s second game of the weekend; however, shining bright in the OUA’s Marquee Matchup. With her team down 1-0 to the reigning McCaw Cup finalists, Strassburger was able to tie things up a 1-apiece with her first goal of the season halfway through the second period. Not stopping there, the Lakers forward doubled down in the third period to give her side the 2-1 lead, which they would not relinquish.
Strassburger’s productive start has given her a share of the early conference lead in goals (2) and points (3) for the No. 10 ranked Lakers.
Male Athlete of the Week – Brendan Jacome (Caledon, Ont.) – 3rd Year – Ottawa Gee-Gees
After watching their competition take to the ice the week prior, the Ottawa Gee-Gees got their season underway this past weekend and were spearheaded by alternate captain Brendan Jacome early on.
With his side down 2-0 in their opener against cross-town rival Carleton, Jacome was able to break the Gee-Gees’ goose-egg for the team’s first goal of the season. Not only did his marker cut the lead in half with just minutes to play in the second frame, it helped set up the team’s eventual comeback victory in the shootout.
To finish off their weekend, the Gee-Gees welcomed the No. 5 McGill Redmen to the nation’s capital for a top-10 tilt that Jacome and the team clearly welcomed with open arms. After seeing Ottawa get off to a 2-0 lead themselves this time, it was Jacome who once again chipped in with the game’s third goal; this time to extend the Garnet and Grey’s cushion. He would go on to add Ottawa’s fifth and final goal of the game – his second of the night and third of the season – early in the second period to really put the game out of reach.
After his tidy four-point output (3G, 1A), Jacome is one of nine players with three or more goals this season, but one of just three with more than a goal per game.
