Da Silva, Gray named IG Wealth Management Athletes of the Week, powered by Planters
Burlington, Ont. – Chiara Da Silva and Kadre Gray have been named IG Wealth Management Ontario University Athletics (OUA) Athletes of the Week, powered by Planters, for the period ending November 4, 2018.
Female Athlete of the Week – Chiara Da Silva (Toronto, Ont.) – 2nd Year – York Lions
The York Lions women’s volleyball team is off to a 3-0 start this season, and a big reason why they were able to tack on two more victories this past week was thanks to OUA Female Athlete of the Week, Chiara Da Silva.
The second-year setter had her fingerprints all over the Lions latest wins – a 3-1 victory over Guelph and a 3-0 triumph against Trent – thanks to her precision work at the net and uncanny ability to thrive whenever the ball came her way. The Toronto native had 36 assists to go along with 11 digs, two points, and two service aces against the Gryphons, before following that up with another 30 assists, three digs, and two kills against the Excalibur. Da Silva truly shone in each aspect of the game this week.
After her strong start to the season, Da Silva currently ranks sixth in the OUA with 8.18 assists per set.
Male Athlete of the Week – Kadre Gray (Toronto, Ont.) – 3rd Year – Laurentian Voyageurs
Kadre Gray has picked up right where he left off last year, and after taking home just about every piece of hardware in the country last season, he has kicked off his 2018-19 campaign with the OUA’s Male Athlete of the Week award.
In Laurentian’s first action of the season, the third-year guard anchored an impressive pair of wins, and in typical fashion, stuffed the stat sheet to do so. In his 2018 debut against the Nipissing Lakers, which comes after missing the end of the previous season due to injury, Gray racked up a triple-double performance of 32 points, 11 rebounds, and 13 assists, all while shooting above 50% from the field (10-for-18). For an encore performance then, the reigning OUA and U SPORTS Player of the Year outdid even his best, setting a new career-high in points. Gray poured in 48 points (13-for-23 FG) against the Lakehead Thunderwolves, adding on another nine rebounds and five assists as well.
Gray’s lofty start already has him leading the conference (and country) in scoring with 40 PPG, to go along with an OUA-best nine assists per contest and a second-ranked 10 rebounds per game.
